P-Dub... i was at the game too in the student section.... and i just thought our setting was really bad... Sam couldn't get any good balls up, and linds always has problems not getting the ball up high enough. I thought in the 2nd game Steph was our savior in the middle finally putting some balls down. ALSO our blocking is week... what do you attribute that to, the loss of renata and the inexperience of sam, or??

Sam couldn't get any good balls up, and linds always has problems not getting the ball up high enough. It's a broken record, but a lot of that problem in games 1 and 2 was the lackluster backcourt play, and poor serve reception. Miller and Mastandrea were really struggling to even get to the serves, much less make a good pass on them. That started from the very first serve of the match that Miller shanked. Dildine was the only one making the plays she should, and that's why she moved to L in the third game. Just a lot of lacklusterness. You won't often see Mader miss clean shots, but she had a couple of those last night. Merlau wasn't getting anything solid at first, but she started hitting harder as the match went on (although she gets dug a lot). Gurnell and Pierce never really got much of a chance at anything. Carrie's still a little tentative, and gets a little tight playing at home. She needs to get some confidence to get her aggressiveness back. The switch to OH has also been a problem, mainly because I think she doesn't quite understand her role there (middles go everywhere - hitters need discipline) As for the blocking, I really don't know the problem there (the coaches would probably love it if I did, because they are frustrated as well). Jacques still isn't up to her freshman year form. She says she feels fine, but I still wonder. Right now, this team relies on its serving and it's backrow play. Gray is probably the best server on the team, even better than Dildine's jump serve (although Brittany has started putting a side-spin on her serve, and man is that tough; her ball has always had a hard top-spin, but it usually went to the center of the court. Now it's got a hard dive to the left. From my spot on the endline, I get a player-eye view of that serve coming in and wow, its nasty). But if they struggle with their serve, and/or the backrow is not getting to the balls they should, they will be struggle. The serve was fine last night, but the backcourt wasn't covering what they should.
