Who is this Dayton team, and why are they seemingly doing so well this year?

Who is this Dayton team, and why are they seemingly doing so well this year? Barhorst is the centerpiece, an under-recruited stud athlete who's really blossomed in college. Good foundation was set before Horsmon took the helm. They've built on that with solid recruits from Ohio and Chicago amongst other locales. Huge lift for this year was the transfer of Bateman from L'ville.

Barhorst is probably the best player most people don't know about, though she is slowly gaining some recognition. I guarantee most college coaches know about her. Mary couldn't say enough good things about her last year when Dayton played in Gainesville as well as this past summer when Mary coached her on the A2 team. She really is an amazing talent.

Other tidbits:
*Sarah Florian's little sister, Allison, is a frosh DS there.
*Barhorst is hitting .418 (and that's against some pretty tough competition)
*Chauntay Mickens (.291) is the only other starter over .220

Florian had shoulder issues.
Dayton is a mid major with a goal of becoming a ranked team. And they are oh-so-close. They are a couple of upsets away and may have pulled one of those upsets out over this past week if they were at full strength - missing last years starting left and thier do it all sub (left, middle, right and even backrow) against Purdue or LSU.
That said is is a whole lot easier to get close than to actually get there but with Dayton it seems more like WHEN it will happen than IF it will happen.

Dayton has been the A-10 rep in the NCAA tournament the last couple of years. They lost in the first round to ND at South Bend in 5 last year.

Barhorst is nice player but would be eaten alive if in a volleyball conference like the Pac-10 or Big Ten.

I have to disagree. This is a serious athlete with pop on the ball. I think she could start for everyone except Penn State right now.

Barhorst is nice player but would be eaten alive if in a volleyball conference like the Pac-10 or Big Ten. In the three matches Dayton has played against the Big Ten and Pac Ten, she is averaging 3.1 kpg, hitting .484 and averaging 1.3 blocks per game. I'd love to have a Purdue player struggle this much against the Big Ten this year. Yeah, Indiana is at the bottom of the Big Ten, but Purdue and Arizona are fair representatives of the conferences. She has been anything but eaten alive. Dayton also has Illinois and Minnesota coming, so we will learn more about how she competes against Big Ten competition.

Barhorst could and probably would start anywhere in the country, including PSU.

Well, barring injury, probably wouldn't be starting at Texas, UCLA, Stanford, Hawai'i has three excellent MBs, Florida is probably out now, Washington is likely out, USC and Cal are likely out of the question... so, which teams?
