Any changes in the 1-25? Thoughts? Yeah, several teams will move up the poll, yet several other teams will fall while a few will stay where they are. ;D ;D

PennState gets more #1 votes.
SCU, UH, Mizzou, BYU, Ariz, NDame all drop a few. Wash, Flor, Texas, USC, Cal, OhioSt, LSU move up
NDame out of the Top25, Michigan in. Maybe even Mizzou drops out and KState in.
Not sure about CalPoly, the don't deserve to drop any after their performance this weekend but I do think the voters will drop them out of the Top25. TexasA&M would probably take over the #25 spot then.

Louisville should drop out.

There's a lot of inertia in the AVCA poll. I'm thinking nobody drops in the poll unless they have an unexpected loss. That means Nebraska, Penn State, and UCLA are set where they are. Another tip comes from a weekly results report that AVCA puts out: www.avca.org/collegiate/DIresults/divisioniresults9-10-06.pdfSo I would expect that Santa Clara moves down. BYU moves down. Arizona, Notre Dame are off of the poll. It's harder to say what happens to Cal Poly, but Louisville moves down, and maybe off the poll. [Edit: typos]

In tracking the USC matches, this team appears to be better than most expected. Gysin back at full strength makes a huge difference and the Polish hammer is as good as advertised. Where would Mick be without her? I think SC is a top 5 team. I would wager on USC over UCLA at this point - based on matches played so far. Carico is also making a significant improvement in the Trojan offense.

USC may deserve to be a top 5 team, but they won't actually make it there until they beat someone who's ranked higher. I see three Pac-10 teams ranked above them, so they'll get their chance.

There's a lot of inertia in the AVCA poll. I'm thinking nobody drops in the poll unless they have an unexpected loss. That means NU, PSU, and UCLA are set where they are. That is true, to an extent. The only disagreement I would have is with your "unexpected" qualifier. In general, teams that lose will drop in the AVCA poll, regardless of whether the loss is "expected" or not. However, teams that lose to those ranked much higher than them will not drop as much as they would if it were a team ranked lower. Oddly enough, teams will get hit the hardest when they lose badly to those ranked very close to themselves, more than they would if they lost badly to an unranked team, even. However, voters do take 5 gamers into into account, so Texas's loss to Penn St is not going to hurt as bad. In volleyball, the general procedure is to predict a loss of 3 spots for each loss to an unranked team, and 2 spots for a loss to a ranked team. Note that it doesn't mean necessarily that someone ranked 9th last week will automatically be ranked 11th this week after a loss to a ranked team, because it will depend on what the other teams around it do. If the 10th and 11th teams lose, too, then the team might only drop to 10th or not at all. In general, once in the poll, there is little "reward" for good wins. I used to have a list of about 10 rules, empirically derived, that could be used to predict the AVCA poll.

I have seen USC play twice this year and I think they are the best team in the PAC 10. I have seen Washington, UCLA and Stanford and USC is without question the best of those three. I have not seen Cal, but they look like they will be in the Pac 10 title hunt as well. It is going to be a great Pac 10 season this year.

As an appetizer, here is the Pablo top baker's dozen this week
1 Penn State 2 USC 3 Texas 4 Washington 5 Nebraska 6 LSU 7 Wisconsin 8 Utah 9 Stanford 10 Santa Clara 11 California 12 Ohio State 13 UCLA
Florida is the biggest team missing (at 15), but they are probably a victim of UCLA's sleepwalks through Texas St and Denver

As an appetizer, here is the Pablo top baker's dozen this week You are going to start a thread at some point for the main course, aren't you? I'm curious about what pulled UCLA down. Was it that they didn't dominate Texas State and Denver enough?

As an appetizer, here is the Pablo top baker's dozen this week You are going to start a thread at some point for the main course, aren't you? They will be out in full tonight. I support keeping it a premium service (although I think Rich is making available to everyone) That is my take on the matter. I have just done some analysis on strength of schedule, and in the end, UCLA's schedule hasn't been overwhelmingly strong, comparable to Oregon's but not up to Nebraska or Minnesota. Slightly better than Purdue's, which is why UCLA is ahead of them.
