I am not a fan of Pat Hill and Fresno State fans are pretty classless, but he runs a pretty stand up program. The Academic Gameplan program that his special teams coach, Ron Baxter, created is being bought and implemented by other programs. You don't hear about a lot of guys being academically inelligible or getting much in trouble. After the Tarkanian days, that is what the Fresno community is used to. I like how Nieves went out and put together a tough, tough schedule. Sure their record is weak, but some young girls got some good experience. You also see Nieves around at local high school games. Last year he even came to a camp for boys in 4th through 6th grade put on by a high school on Clovis. He and his staff seem very committed to the volleyball community here in the Fresno/Clovis area and a lot of people appreciate that.

I know Ruben personally, and I can't think of a more upstanding and generous person than him. I'm not surprised that he puts so much effort into doing things the "right way". Still I wouldn't mind if Cal managed to sneak away a top player or two from the Fresno area. I have no personal knowledge, but I know that the HS/junior talent there is really good.

Yeah I don't know Nieves at all. I became a huge admirer when I was a freshman in high school, and Stanford won the national championship. It took a few more years until I realized how much of a feat that is, and how hard it is to win a men's national championship at Stanford when there are essentially no scholarships.
So when he came to Fresno State, I read about from Utah and was bit upset because this community and athletic department don't really care much for coaches building programs the right way if they don't win right away. Coming back to California and seeing Nieves at high school and club functions, and seeing that he brought Matt Tera over from Fresno Pacific, it got me very excited. It would be nice to see some of these girls stay here.
