Yeah, some great action in the Big Ten tonight! I just wish some of them were on TV!

Ugh
Man, I don't think I want to see the box score. I bet Purdue out hit them by .100 points.
Blocks were something like 15 - 3 in favor of Purdue. 3 blocks for MSU in a 5 game match
MSU dug the snot out of the ball, though
Not quite 100 points, but Purdue hits .333 to MSU's .241
13 hitting hitting errors for Purdue on the night
Katie Johnson had 14 for MSU, but had 35 kills (hitting 296)

Skin of your teeth, boilermakers.... tough loss for Michigan State, but should be somewhat of a confidence builder moving forward

It could have been worse, Ed....they could have lost...to Indiana...
After that mess, I'll take the win, close or not

What a strange night in the Big Ten, Purdue goes 5 with MSU, IU beats Michigan, Iowa plays Penn State well for Iowa.
Mischelle Nelson only had four attempts for the five games that she played in. I wonder why she wasn't involved more. That could have made the difference in the match, she has been hitting pretty effectively all year so far. The box score says the Purdue head coach got a yellow card in game four, wonder what that was about.

The Purdue bench was complaining about the MSU libero overhand setting the ball in front of the attack line. She did. R2, Pufhal, mistakenly thought they were calling for a double contact. Purdue kept on her and she asked for a card.
Although not listed in the boxscore, I am pretty sure MSU got one in the 5th game because they kept asking how many subs they had left when they already knew they had been told they were out of subs and timeouts.
It was hard to tell because R1 had some awful signaling skills. Sort of got the yellow card out and teased everyone with it instead of making a clear signal.

Ultravision, what did you think of the reffing? I thought it was pretty bad- LOTS of late calls. It was like they would wait for the other bench to stomp around in outrage and then make the call. It didn't really seem to favor any team though. MSU really should have won this game in 4. They were up 26-22 in the third game and ended up losing 27-30.
Tracy Bellwood must be injured or on probation. She was dressed in jeans on the bench, and I think it would have helped to have her in the back row for Katie Johnson. I'm pretty sure that Katie Johnson hit at least 90% of her backrow attacks out of bounds. I'll post more if I can think clearly in a few minutes.

I wonder why Melanie Rarey was not subbed in for Johnson? Although from the stats it seems that Johnson had a good match offensively (11 digs), Rarey has been playing really well in the back row lately. Maybe they wanted to keep the possibility of back row attacks open.

I know that the Spartans have a talented tandem of outsides, but their arms might fall off if they don't get more diversity in their offense. They had no right side attack tonight, which just makes it easier to key on the lefts. The middles were effective with their swings, but three blocks? Three? Either Purdue had the greatest coverage ever, or MSU had some serious problems in that regard. Anyway, it has to give Purdue confidence that they were able to gut this one out, and MSU at least showed that they will be tough at home. I am not sure what to think of the Spartans, though. How good is Ianni? Is it really a great idea to have a transfer setter start for a year to win a few more matches? Maybe they just weren't able to find the setter around whom they want to rebuild the program. As it is, they will have some talent in the third year of the new regime next year, but they will also have a new setter and libero. It might be hard to sustain momentum that way.

I think having Ianni set this year was a great idea. I have not seen Vander Meer play (the other setter on the roster), but Ianni was able to play during spring season, so she had the chance to establish some chemistry and also provide some senior leadership.
I don't know why Jessica Hohl was not more involved last night. She has improved a lot since last season, and has been hittin well all year. I don't know if the passing was lacking last night, and that contributed to the emphasis on the outsides.
I hope MSU can beat IU tonight. It is weird to actually be concerned about that match.

The Purdue bench was complaining about the MSU libero overhand setting the ball in front of the attack line. She did. Was it just once, or did it happen a couple of times? The first time it is missed, I usually don't have a problem if the ref acknowledges she may have missed it. If it happens a few times, or if the ref doesn't even realize it happened, then I think there are grounds for serious complaints.

Ultravision, what did you think of the reffing? IMHO, it was bad but atleast it was bad both ways. R1 was pretty slow on the call and tight on ball handling. R2 was just bad. I don't think she had a clue and she's a high up mucky muck with PAVO. For the Big 10, it was a poor showing.

I agree with yappachooka. Vander Meer is not ready to step in as a starting Freshman setter. She is much better off learning and watching someone who does it well now. It also allows the team to compete at a higher level this year to better prepare them for future years.

That could have made the difference in the match, she has been hitting pretty effectively all year so far. With all due respect to both Yappachooka and Nelson, Yap must not have watched her play or followed her stats. After a terrific weekend in Muncie...not all terrific. And a lot of "kills" have been wiffs and mis-hits that caught her by surprise as much as the defense. She will be a solid hitter...but not yet.
