It's been a while since Washington's lost a conference series hasn't it? When was the last time anyway? Was it during the pre-McLaughlin era? Per UW's website, the last time UW was swept by LA schools was in 2003. [ftp]http://gohuskies.cstv.com/sports/w-volley/recaps/093006aaa.html[/ftp] LOS ANGELES-- The fourth-ranked Washington volleyball team dropped its second match in as many days with a 3-1 loss to fifth-ranked USC Friday night at the Lyon Center. The loss comes one night after a heartbreaking five-game loss at UCLA, marking the first time the Huskies have been swept by the L.A. schools since the 2003 season. Game scores were 28-30, 30-27, 30-21, 30-28.

The Women of Troy took the lead in the second game, breaking away at 5-4 with a 7-4 run thanks to two Carico "310" kills. What is a "310" kill?

Megan McAfee?? I see two games in a row now JM has inserted McAfee, a freshman, into the late games. Anyone know much about her? Is he working her into possible starting rotation later in the season??

Is he working her into possible starting rotation later in the season?? For the match last night, McAfee was used as a backrow sub for Collymore in game 4 when Mussie was taken out. Mussie did play a rotation though, subbing in for Sandell at the Opp.

The Women of Troy took the lead in the second game, breaking away at 5-4 with a 7-4 run thanks to two Carico "310" kills. What is a "310" kill? I think it is just an area code they used to describe Carico's second ball slams, pretty much like "619" which is San Diego phone code that Reggie Bush famously wrote under his eyes. If I am right in about that 310, then it is just an area code for the beach cities/westside LA which she is from.

It's remarkable how many off-target passes Courtney can turn into good plays, but I've seen at least once before a string of passes that she just couldn't do much with. Yeah, Thompson couldn't do much with all the bad passes. She was sent running all over the 10 foot line for about half of the match, thus predictable high outside sets. Occasionally she would set the pipe but Mussie and Sandell would sent them out most of the time.

So what is she gonna do when the beach cities get the overlay, and they're like the 232 or something like that? I don't think of 310 as beach cities. I think of it as West LA. I think it is just an area code they used to describe Carico's second ball slams, pretty much like "619" which is San Diego phone code that Reggie Bush famously wrote under his eyes. I figure she has potential ans is seeing playing time, even if she isn't a regular. That's what they did somewhat with Swarbrick last year.

What Volleytalkers were at the game? I'm starting to think I've pegged a few. You mean Mick Haley?

If Cal improved their ranking by getting beat by Washington does this weekend move USC and UCLA to 1 and 2?

One of those schools should get Washington's one first-place vote, but other than that no, the AVCA poll won't get disturbed much. As long as #1 and #2 don't lose, and the Pac-10 teams don't lose to anyone unexpcted, 1 and 2 will remain with Nebraska and Penn state, and the Pac-10 teams will have to fight it out for positions 3,4,5,6, and 7.

With LBSU not giving much reason for the press to write anout their team, LB Press Telegram had written an article on USC/UW match:
College volleyball: Unbeaten USC tops Washington BY JILL PAINTER Staff Writer
USC's women's volleyball team passed its first real test with ease. Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Gysin had 20 kills to lead fifth-ranked USC to a 28-30, 30-27, 30-21, 30-28 victory Friday over No. 4 Washington at Lyon Center, sending the Huskies home from L.A. following successive losses.
The Trojans improved to 15-0, 4-0 in the Pacific-10 Conference.
"For a new team, I can't be anything but happy about that," USC coach Mick Haley said. "But there's nine more weeks before December. Every weekend is going to be like this."
Washington hopes that's not the case. A day earlier, it squandered a two-game lead and lost at UCLA.
"It sucks to lose, but we we've just got to go back to the gym and work hard," outside hitter Janine Sandell said.
USC lost the first game, but Washington, perhaps fatigued from its five-game loss Thursday, had 14 service errors, which killed several rallies.
The Trojans kept All-American Christal Morrison in check with 21 kills, but Washington, with some of the best blockers in the country, combined for 17 team blocks. USC had 15.
Libero Deborah Seilhamer had a solid game for the Trojans with 36 digs. Asia Kaczor had 18 kills and Diane Copenhagen 16.
"I think every team is hard to beat, but with our confidence and energy, we're ready to beat everybody," Kaczor said.

From Seattles Times:
UW Volleyball | Huskies get swept out of Los Angeles By TERRY WOOD
Special to The Seattle Times
LOS ANGELES — The last time the Washington volleyball team lost back-to-back matches? In 2003.
Where? Southern California.
That less than cheery bit of history for Huskies fans repeated itself Friday night when, one night after a five-game defeat against No. 3 UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, the fourth-ranked Huskies fell 3-1 to No. 5 USC.
Thus Washington (12-3 overall, 2-2 Pac-10) wrapped up its challenging start to the Pac-10 schedule — four matches against four top-10 teams — with a split decision.
Coach Jim McLaughlin expressed some disappointment, but not discouragement over what some might view as a lost week.
"It's always tough to play down here," he said. "Both of these schools always have excellent programs, and that was the best I've seen a USC team play in years."
The Women of Troy (15-0, 4-0) used a formidable defense to keep Washington's offense on its heels for most of the match. USC posted 82 digs to Washington's 79.
Washington could not sustain the momentum of its first-game rally for a victory as USC controlled the rest of the evening, 28-30, 30-27, 30-21, 30-28.
"We didn't serve well and we didn't pass well, so our offense could never get untracked," McLaughlin said. "Serving and passing are essential for what we do. Our offense relies on that.'
Washington committed an eye-popping 14 service errors, compared to six for USC.
Christal Morrison led UW with 21 kills. Stevie Mussie added 18, but also committed 11 attack errors.
"We have some things we need to work on," McLaughlin said. "It's still early, so I'm not too worried about our team. We just have to do some work in the gym."
Outside hitter Janine Sandell, who had just three kills, agreed.
"Like the coach told us, it's not magic. It takes work," she said.
The Huskies trailed 24-22 in Game 1, but outscored USC 8-4 down the stretch to pull out the 30-28 victory. Two stellar serves by Mussie, the second one an ace, closed out what seemed to be a confidence-boosting comeback after the defeat Thursday night against UCLA.
"The whole issue is improving," McLaughlin said. "Like the way we battled tonight. We have some things to improve, and we will. These players have the will to do it."
NOTE
• McLaughlin won his first NCAA title as coach of the 1990 USC men's team. By leading UW to the 2005 women's title, he became the first coach to win both an NCAA men's and women's crown.
USC beat Washington 28-30, 30-27, 30-21, 30-28 (UW highlights — Mussie, 18 kills, 11 digs; Deesing, 11 kills; Thompson, 61 assists, 18 digs; Morrison, 21 kills, 10 digs; Swarbrick, 14 kills; Miyashiro, 30 digs).
