I have gone back over the data for weeks 5 (week ending September 24) through week 10 (week ending October 29) of the Pick-the-Winners contests to determine how the RKPI fared each week in comparison with Pablo and the Rich Kern and AVCA polls and to calculate the cumulative results so far. Because of the amount of space each weeks comparison takes, I will show each week in separate posts and include the cumulative results only with the week 10 (the most current) results.
Week 8 (week ending 10-15; based on 10-9 Pablo, RKPI, AVCA and Rich Kern Polls):
MATCHES FOR WEEK ENDING 10-15-06 ONLY:
1. MATCHES WHERE PABLO, RKPI, AVCA AND RICH KERN ARE ALL HEAD-TO-HEAD:
Pablo 12-5 RKPI 8-9 Rich Kern 7-10 AVCA 8-9
2. PABLO HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH RICH KERN ONLY:

3. PABLO HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH AVCA ONLY:

Because of the amount of space each weeks comparison takes, I will show each week in separate posts and include the cumulative results only with week 10 (the most current) results. Week 10 (week ending 10-29; based on 10-23 Pablo, RKPI, AVCA and Rich Kern Polls): MATCHES FOR WEEK ENDING 10-29-06 ONLY: 1. MATCHES WHERE PABLO, RKPI, AVCA AND RICH KERN ARE ALL HEAD-TO-HEAD: Pablo 12-3 RKPI 13-2 Rich Kern 13-2 AVCA 12-3 2. PABLO HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH RICH KERN ONLY: Pablo 15-4 Rich Kern 16-3 3. PABLO HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH AVCA ONLY: Pablo 12-3 AVCA 12-3 4. PABLO HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH RKPI ONLY: Pablo 17-8 RKPI 17-8 5. RKPI HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH RICH KERN ONLY: RKPI 14-5 Rich Kern 16-3 6. RKPI HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH AVCA ONLY: RKPI 12-3 AVCA 12-3 Can you go back and retrocheck? I'd love to see the full comparison. The AVCA vs RPI - I'd lean with the AVCA, probably, but it's not obvious. I know how RKPI compares to Pablo - it lags about 5% behind. However, 5% behind Pablo in the overall standings would put it about 52 - 23, which is still better than the AVCA. If that were to pan out, wouldn't that be a kicker!? CUMULATIVE RESULTS (Weeks 5-10, covering the period September 18-October 29. These include all the weekly Pablo and RKPI rankings generated this year except for the first two, 9-4 and 9-11): 1. MATCHES WHERE PABLO, RKPI, AVCA AND RICH KERN ARE ALL HEAD-TO-HEAD: Pablo 78-28 RKPI 69-37 Rich Kern 72-34 AVCA 70-36 2. PABLO HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH RICH KERN ONLY: Pablo 83-33 Rich Kern 79-37 3. PABLO HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH AVCA ONLY: Pablo 81-30 AVCA 72-39 4. PABLO HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH RKPI ONLY: Pablo 106-44 70.7% RKPI 94-56 62.7% 5. RKPI HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH RICH KERN ONLY: RKPI 76-40 Rich Kern 79-37 6. RKPI HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH AVCA ONLY: RKPI 71-40 AVCA 72-39

So much for the facts. Probably to no one's surprise, Pablo is superior to the other three. And to Idahoboy's relief, his overall picks were more accurate than the RKPI.

Pablo also had a better than (other rankings) week in the D2 and D3 tournaments. The story should be available at richkern.com later today.

This week's contest should make for some interesting results. The AVCA and Kern polls and RKPI all agree on 21 of the 22 head-to-head matches (the exception being only RKPI picks UCLA over USC).
On the other hand, Pablo picks six of those 22 matches differently from the AVCA and Kern polls (five differently from RKPI; both picking UCLA over USC). It may come as no surprise that in all six of those matches, the only reason for the difference is the Pablo HCA points. So an opportunity for Pablo this week to soar, or for the others to close the gap. Of course, if Pablo is correct on only three of the different picks, then all four rankings will be pretty close to identical.

For matches that close, Pablo doesn't expect to get them all right (nor all wrong). Most of the time, Pablo would say expect 3, with an occasional 4, and less occasional 2.

Just noticed, p-dub, that you have an even 5K posts. Don't know what to say, given your propensity for declining a pat on the back, except that I hope to read another 5K!

Compared to the others, this was by far Pablo's worst week; perhaps it is more appropriate to say that the other three did amazingly well. None of the latter had more than two losses in 22/25 matches. Pablo correctly called 17 of 25. Five of the eight losses were because of the HCA, which the other ratings do not take into account. If Pablo's HCA had been 214, for example, instead of the actual 277, Pablo would have had a 22-3 record for the week. In head-to-head matches, Pablo maintains its overall lead over RKPI and AVCA, but has now been tied overall by the Rich Kern Poll.
A. CUMULATIVE RESULTS (Weeks 5-13, covering the period September 18-November 19. These include all the weekly Pablo and RKPI rankings generated this year except for the first two, 9-4 and 9-11):

Pablo recouped some of its losses from last week by outperforming all of the other rankings this week, to increase its overall lead against all of them. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Glad to see Pablo recover, though. How are you going to handle the rest? Unlike AVCA and RKPI, Pablo is not going to update next week. Once the tournament starts, I think rankings should be locked for the rest of the time. You could just use the end of the season Pablo rankings all the way out. I would venture to guess it will still outperform the updated AVCA rankings.
