It was a pretty good effort for the Badgers tonight and a really ugly one for the Boilers in the first two games. Purdue's back row players surprisingly struggled to pass, and the setting wasn't great even when they were in system, in my opinion. Does Lynch ever get anything to hit? She had some smart kills but wasn't able to hit the ball hard due to less than great sets. Simpson also struggled to connect with the middles, especially Bladow, who had one kill and five errors. On the good side for the Badgers, Dolgner was the best player on the court tonight, and DuPont had some really impressive kills as well. Jeffers also really crushed some attacks, including one on a game point for Purdue in the third game. It is good to see her putting the ball away even on obvious sets from the middles. Otherwise, the Badgers passed decently, giving up no errors even with the heat Purdue can bring from the service line. The Badger block was pretty good early, allowing the defense to dig around it. Purdue hit a lot better when they finally got in system in the third game, but the Badgers are stronger at the net, in my opinion. Purdue really needs to get the back row play they expect, and the Badgers outplayed them there tonight. I somehow doubt Wack is crying somewhere over the end of her streak. She missed a couple of digs but passed and served pretty well; the ball just didn't come her way that much. Berkley and Simpson picked up the slack defensively. I thought the streak would end in a Badger win, but I didn't think it would be against a good team. Anyway, I was thrilled to see how the Badgers responded after their losses last weekend. Purdue was really off, but Wisconsin deserves credit for taking advantage of that and winning the last four points of the match. DuPont seems to be really improved from the beginning of the season and is a pretty powerful attacker. I hope Carlini is back soon, but this bodes well for the future.

After watching Purdue this year vs watching last year's Boilermaker team, at this point I can only conclude that last year's edition was much better. A better blocking team, a far better setter, and even better ball control.
Merlau chips, dinks and tips more than any outside I have seen this year. She looked somewhat intimidated out there tonight.
I thought Purdue was a good serving team, but didn't even see that tonight. They had no aces, and numerous service errors, some which were real momentum breakers.
I can only think that the Badgers caught Purdue on an off night, which all teams seem to have sooner or later.

It will be interesting to see how Purdue performs tonight. It could be that we are seeing the difficulty teams will have preparing for MN and WI in the same weekend. Not as easy to prepare when WI is matched with NW and MN with IA.
I wish MN and WI would be travel partners more often. It would suck to have the Wednesday night matches but at least the match should draw more fans than the Wednesday night match featuring IA as the opponent.
