LOL...Bearclause,,don't worry about me. I help train players and watch lots of great high school volleyball in the area. "Help train players"? Playing for 30 years and all you can say for your involvement with the sport and giving something back is "help train players"? Oh, and I'm most certainly not a parent of a volleyball player.

LOL...Bearclause,,don't worry about me. I help train players and watch lots of great high school volleyball in the area. OK then. Then why are you defending Wolfie's stance that HS VB "blows"? There's crap volleyball being played at almost every level. It very well can blow. I've been to a few where I really felt bad for a losing team which was outmatched in every facet of the game. I've seen some downright pathetic D-I volleyball teams (Auburn in 2001 comes to mind). HS volleyball doesn't "blow". Individual teams might. Thanks you said what I was trying to say, but much better. If you love the sport, then love it and appreciate it at every level. Oftentimes when a team exhibits poor fundamentals or bad play, it isn't entirely the fault of the athletes on the team. Not every program at any level (D1 college down to youth volleyball programs) can have access to CAP Level III certified coaches. But within these less-than-elite programs with poor fundamentals or bad play, if there is a love of the sport present in that gym, and an honest effort, are they still not playing and appreciating this great sport? Today was a good example. I officiated a CIF-SS match at a small school halfway between the Central Coast and the Central Valley of California. Neither team was that good, but the match was highly entertaining. Coaches were trying their best, as were the athletes. At the end of the match, both teams all came over and shook my hand and my partner's hand and told us thanks for officiating the match. I gave them all encouragement, particularly one tall girl that was having difficulty blocking because she was too far off the net. I just gave her a quick tip on blocking and some key words "Hands to the Tape" and explained what that meant. Don't know if she understood that, or even if she will incorporate that as she continues to play. But, also, you never know when you could potentially be that one spark that inspires an athlete to pursue greater things in volleyball. To me, that's what the magic is in this sport. Not watching NCAA Championship matches every December, or the Olympics every 4 years.

I was trying to say that most High School VB in our area is very good. After reading my first post it sounds like I am agreeing with Wolf. My further comments were directed at the poster who after a lively discussion about great High school volleyball labeled us elitist. etc....etc...

You are certainly not a parent and you enjoy reffing volleyball even if it elementary. " Wonderful," news for all concerned !!! If thats what it takes to keep you entertained then by all means carry on.

So, holidayhusker, you are saying that if you cannot be involved at the high levels there is no sense in being involved at all? Nice attitude. Seems to me that all players start out at a somewhat elementary level at one point.

Did I say that??? I believe that was their point was that they enjoyed volleyball at all levels even at the early levels. Correct? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) We all like different levels of volleyball. We are all fans of the game. Should we apologize for that. Must be a very boring few day on this bored when we are arguing about something as stupid as this. Good Lord.

Well for me, recently retired HS coach who worked all levels of HS play over 21 years. I also worked with club ages 14-18's over the years. I am now officiating HS vb in Nebraska and it's been a lot of fun!! The level of play in Nebraska continues to improve, even in the smaller schools. Now if we can just get the Nebraska School Association to let Omaha have the state tourney and do it at Qwest rather than in the terrible scattered sites of Lincoln and our wonderful Pershing Center, the event would really be something!!!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, all this discussion about elitism and loving vb no matter what is fine and dandy. That's what this board is about. But it doesn't change the fact that there are CHILD PEDOPHILES in the stands and in the streets!!! Oh, heaven help us!!

My daughter plays HS volleyball, so I attend every one of her games. We also host two tournaments and attend a large tournament, so I see a lot of HS volleyball each Fall. There are some really good games (like last night) and some downright ugly ones. Our league is one great team, one almost great team, two good teams and then the rest. Some of those games against "the rest" can be quite painful to watch.
The game last night between the top two teams in our league (who are each others big rivals) was a great match - especially a great HS match. It featured very good play on both sides, suspense, long rallies, great plays and very good atmosphere. The students from both schools were really into it. Most of the players from both schools play for the same Club program and everyone has known each other for years. The wrong team won, but both teams could walk away with a good feeling and take something positive from the game into this weekends playoffs.
It can be the same way at the college level. I have seem some painful blowouts and some great nailbiters. The UW game against UCLA in the regioanl finals in 2004 was probably the best game I have ever seen. And then there were some of the pre-season contest where the only "suspense" was how many games we would hold the other team under 10 points.

Best MN high school match I ever saw was a tournament match between Chaska and ... I want to say Moorhead. Is that right? Dunno.
Amanda Rome v. the Peterson sisters (now coaching at Augustana, I think).
In case anyone cares.
It's what I was writing about DII volleyball last night: sometimes a little less height and power = more excitement. Not always, but it's a good change of pace.
This year I got to see a HS match where one of the teams had an OH who was 5'1". She could jump. I'll say that for her.

He was describing that (listed) 5'6" player I mentioned - Kristen Kathan. She was the kill leader in that 5-game 2005 CIF NorCal D-III I was talking about earlier. chancelucky.blogspot.com/2005/10/northgate-tournament-volleyball-2005.html

I'm in Seattle, WA. I went to a high school vball match earlier this year that was held at Eastlake High School in Eastlake WA. It was a tournament that featured some of the best high school programs in WA with the special apperance of national powerhouse from Hon. Hawai'i, Punahou. It was championship match between Bishop Blanchet probably the best high school team in the state, and Punahou. Bishop Blanchet were monsters at the net averaging 6'1 across the front. Punahou on the other hand wasn't all that tall but the girls can simply jump out of the gym, all of 'em. That was the best high school vball I have seen in years. Punahou eventually came out on top winning easily over Blanchet. Punahou simply had wayyyyy more of thee advantage of experience players that feat. Sidney Yogi, the YNT libero and both outside hitters were recruited by D1 programs such as UC Irvine and Hawaii. It was a really good high school match to watch.............. Just though I would share it with everyone.... I watch high school volleyball on a regular basis. I really enjoy watching high school ball. Like one poster mentioned above you get to see players develop. Punahou is always a fun team to watch and it's always worth it watching Punahou play. Punahou is joined in the same league with two other perenial powers in Kamehameha and Iolani. These three teams battle it out every year to see who will represent their league at the state tournament. Kamehameha features prepvolleyball.com's reigning sophomore of the year Kanani Herring. Kanani is jus an amazing player and draws crowds as she has been called Hawai`i's Kim Willoughby as she has some mad hops and puts down balls with authority. Along with her offense she has great ball handling skills in the back row. Yeah Hawai`i doesn't have the tallest girls, but they have some of the best skilled players in the nation. That makes the volleyball that much more fun to watch especially when they can actually play. Of course Hawai`i has their share of mediocre teams, but for the ones that can actually play it is all well worth it to attend a high school volleyball match.
