On paper this sould be a no brainer. UC Bovine just got their first conference win against a UC Riverside program that, volleyballwise, should be drummed out of the Big West conference.
OTOH, UC Bovine took us to 5 games at Irvine, so as Kathy put it, (paraphrased) the match will depend on whether we come to play.
Go Grouchos!

Well, maybe I won't watch the match. Because freaking CSTV says teh match hasn't started. I don't think the CS stands for College Sports, I think it stands for Chicken S**t.

OK. For a sec I thought you might be referring to UC Davis given their agricultural history.

Okay, I'm getting just a bit nervous about the lack of a reported score...

Gauchos lose in 5 15-13 in the fifth. Quirarte sprains ankle in game 1, out rest of match. Bummer, we have no depth at any position.

The Gauchos were not the best team tonight

It was an ugly match, and the scantily clad men's volleyball team in attendence didn't beautify things any.
I guess it was a heart breaker, but we really didn't deserve it tonight.
Irvine sort of impressed me, even though they totally blew games 3 and 4. I really like their setter. She's tall, quick, left-handed, and she's only a freshman. They also have a freshman named Macall Miller (or something like that). She seemed like a good, aggressive, confident, all-around player who is just going to get better. In fact, most of their team is made up of freshman. If Charlie can coach them well over the next few years, he could have a great thing going.

The bottom line is that our strength was in the middle. Kathy ended up playing an outside, Fletcher, in Quirarte's spot. She did okay blocking, but was a disaster hitting. This team didn't have a lot of confidense this year, and I'm afraid that just went out the window. The truth was that we were living on the edge the whole season with replacements only at DS. I think we jsut fell off the edge.

The frosh setter for Irvine is Taryn Robertson, and she is going to be very good, but not left handed. Kathy moved Saraceno into the middle blocker spot and put the replacement player into the opposite, where she was not very effective. Charlie does have a good thing going with the pups, but they still need a lot of work...

Well, even without Quirarte, we should have pulled out the win v. Irvine (who had never beaten us in SB), but we're just too inconsistent.
Kathy replaced Brett with Lauren Smith at MB for the remainder of the game game brett was injured in, but the results were not that impressive. So for the rest of the games moved Saraceno to MB and brought in Fletcher, who actually looked decent, but we suffered with a much weaker block since Quirarte has become our best blocker.

The frosh setter for Irvine is Taryn Robertson, and she is going to be very good, but not left handed. Hmmm...I guess I just ASSuMEd she was left handed. She just looked so natural with those sneaky left hand dunks. Yeah, we had just made it within one or two points after being down by like 7 or 8 when Brett got hurt, but we won games 3 and 4 without her. Irvine gave us quite a few gifts and we sort of capitalized on them, but then lost that momentum in game 5. Brett could very well have been the difference in game 5, but it shouldn't have even gone that far. I was sort of surprised Irvine didn't finish us in 3 after the way we played in the first half. That had to be a nasty locker room conversation at the half.

It would help their NCAA chances a lot if they were able to beat LBSU, although that will be tough with the injuries.

"and brought in Fletcher, who actually looked decent"
Boy, the stats sure didn't say so. In 4 games, she had 2 solo and 1 block assist. That was okay, but the rest of her line was one dig and hitting -0.400. Bottom line was that we were playing with 4 hitters.

Some observations from the Thunderdome--
UCSB came out very flat, let UCI take a 2-0 lead. Completely different level of play from UCSB after the break, but 0-2 deficits are hard to overcome.
Saraceno had an immediate impact in the middle, blocking well and running some new offensive plays in the middle.
UCI played excellent back row defense, digging the UCSB hitters and consistenly hit the passing target on serve receive and transition.
No more than 30 UCSB students in attendance for an important match-- felt like as many UCI rooters as UCSB supporters. Funniest moment of the evening was when the PA announcer jokingly announced the attendance as 42,000.
Crucial match tonight, hope UCSB can bring their "A" game from the opening whistle.
