No. 2 Long Beach State Strikes Back, Beats No. 6 Warriors, 3-2

HONOLULU -The University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team came out quick but lost steam in their 3-2 (21-30, 23-30, 30-28, 30-27, 15-13) loss versus the Long Beach State 49ers. The Warriors drop to 15-9, 11-7 MPSF, while the 49ers rise to 22-5, 15-5 in the MPSF.
Leading the Warrior offense for the second night in a row was sophomore Matt Bender who had 25 kills for the night. In addition Bender also recorded three digs and six block assists. Pedro Azenha hit 18 kills for the Warriors and also served up three aces in the Warriors loss. Setter Kimo Tuyay dished up 58 assists, while libero Alfred Reft dug 13 balls for the night. The Hawai`i defense was led by middle blocker Joshua Stanhiser who had eight blocks. On top of that Dio Dante and Ryan Woodward each had seven blocks to help the Warriors to a season high 19 blocks. Notably Woodward recorded the first solo block of his career tonight, while Delano Thomas' two aces propelled him to the No. 2 spot on the Warriors all-time career ace list.
In game one the Warriors were on fire, jumping to an early 4-1 lead. Hawai`i kept a safe distance between their score and the Beach's for most of the game. A kill by 49er Jeff Wootton put them within three and made the score 23-20, but the Warriors would go on to score eight of the next nine points to give them a 30-21 game one win.
Game two saw the Warriors continue their on court domination, but the Beach kept the score closer for the first half. At mid game Hawai`i led by six after a Stanhiser kill and block. After the media time out the Warriors pulled ahead by as much as nine before taking the game, 30-23 off a Bender kill.
In game three the 49ers took an early 5-2 lead, but a five point Warrior run gave Hawai`i a two point lead. Long Beach State fought back and kept the score close until they managed to take the game 30-28 off a kill from Scott Touzinsky. Touzinsky would go on to a team high 22 kills for the match, hitting .381.
Game four continued to frustrate the Warriors as the Beach again dominated the court, leading by three at the mid game time out. After the break two Azenha kills put the Warriors within one, but the 49ers had an answer for every Warrior point. At 26-28 a service error from Azenha gave Long Beach State game point and they pushed a fifth game off a Touzinsky kill.
With both teams gunning for the win, game five saw much excitement, with the 49ers leading 4-2 the Warriors went on a 3-0 run to eke out a one-point lead. But the Beach subsequently went on a 3-0 run of their own to tip the score in their favor, 7-5. Hawai`i managed to tie things up at 12-all, but the 49ers took three of the next four points and a 15-13 fifth game win, giving them a 3-2 match victory.
Next week the Warriors will close out home regular season play with a pair of matches against the Anteaters of UC Irvine on April 9 and 10, 7:00 pm at the Stan Sheriff Center.
