We are seeing this all across the country, teams who are normally very good ballhandling teams, having problems with passing. We have talked a lot about OUTSIDE HITTERS and MIDDLE BLOCKERS, which helps if you are a good overall player, and not so much focus on LIBEROS, who I think plays a much bigger role in the outcome of any match.

Liberos aren't worth that much thought. Matter of fact they should, along with the rally scoring experiment that was supposed to make the game more exciting and draw in more spectators, be completely eliminated from the sport.
Bring back sideout scoring, 6 sub max, and 3 entries per game.

No way. The game is much better with the libero (and the let serve). I don't want to see middle blockers trying to dig and pass unless they are actually good defensive players. Better passers and defenders=less ugliness. I am also used to rally scoring, so it can stay.

The sport of volleyball was a much cleaner and skill-based game twenty years ago under that ruleset than it is today. There is no skill, ball-handling, or art left in today's bastardized version of let-serve, no doubling the first contact, let everything except the most gross infractions play, volleyball. If the game returned to where it was, then you would see MORE middle blockers that could actually pass and play defense. You would see more Paula Weishoffs and Karen Kemners and Flo Hymans, and less Cheryl Weavers, Tayyiba Haneefs, and Oganna Nnamanis.

I thought that Weaver actually played back row, but I could be wrong there.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Babe Ruth wouldn't hit .200 if he were playing today. Of course, for a dead guy, that's not too bad.
ALWAYS take the "the game was better back then" talk with a grain of salt.

Liberos were introduced to the game to make it better. Besides, they give face to backrow defense.

Double contacts on the first serve has been allowed for a long time. Since the early nineties at the very least and perhaps even in the late 80s. If I wasn't so lazy I'd go dig up my old rulebooks form wherever they're buried in the basement. Let's bring mintonette back while we're dreaming of the good ol' days. Actually, I'd like to see a return to SOS though.

Weaver did play the back row. Well at least she tried.

After watching Seilhammer the last two nights dig up everything for USC I have to believe the libero helps the game. Interestingly, USC did not sub for anybody in back row but the MH's ( with the libero). Even left in the Polish Rifle, who must be 6'3" and looks somewhat ungainly in back row, along with Copenhagen, another 6'2" bomber. Prime modern candidates for defensive replacements in the back row, but haley left them in. Maybe staying in both front and back row helps players stay in focus and rythmn. USC looked great both nights, with excellent defense.
