Huge night for Jeffers. The Badgers website says her hitting percentage (.722 with 13 kills on 18 attempts with no errors) was the fourth best hitting percentage for a Badger in a four-game match in their history.

And, as a result of Purdue's loss, the worst Wisconsin and Minnesota can do is third in the big ten

It wasn't the prettiest match for Wisconsin. It obviously hurt Illinois to be missing Turner, although Brown looked up to her normal performance level after missing last night's match. I think Edinger helps their passing and back row play; she struggled early but got better as the match went on. The Illini didn't get too much production from the second middle position; Henderson played the first game and Macdonald the last three, but they had a dropoff when Brown went out. They also weren't able to get the aces they usually do; the Badgers shanked some passes but managed to keep the ball in play.
It was a kind of a strange night for the Badgers. They played well in the first game and pretty much dominated the net. In the second game, Illinois passed better and the Badger back row defense was subpar. Illinois was smartly hitting around the Badger block, and Wisconsin couldn't get many digs. They also allowed an overpass and a free ball to fall for points and had some unforced hitting errors. Wisconsin recovered to play better in the third game, winning pretty easily despite a few errors. The fourth game was like the second for the Badgers up to 17-12, but Berkley served a ten point run (they finally ended it when they got Brown to run a slide) and the Badgers closed it out on an 18-2 run. The Illini had a net violation and a couple of hitting errors at the start of the run and then struggled to pass. The wheels just fell off for them.
I thought the Badgers played better than last night but still not their best. The first game and end of the fourth were good, but they still had some unforced hitting errors and missed some serves. Dolgner had five service errors, so fans got to see the unique spectacle of 6'4" serving specialist Morgan Salow a few times (she does have a tough serve). The back row defense wasn't great; Alde had several kills on rollshots from off the net that didn't even get touched. The blocking was best in the first game, as with last night. On the good side, Jeffers hit really well; they ran her to the middle a lot, with very good results, obviously. Dolgner had another good night offensively, and Carlini bounced back somewhat from last night's struggles, getting better as the match went onward. I still wish she would tip against the well-formed double block; she got stuff blocked straight down a couple of times. Bladow had some impressive kills and blocks, finishing with nine of each. Some unforced hitting errors pulled down her percentage, though. In the last two games, she, rather than Reineke, served, and she had an ace. Taylor had a serve that went about twenty feet wide left in the first game, causing the players and coaches to laugh. Simpson's setting was improved over last night, but she still had to move around more than she has had to in earlier home matches. I hope the Badgers have better ball control against Minnesota. They don't get a lot of style points tonight, but they got a win, which is what you need to do at this point of the season. Illinois looks to be struggling at this point. They aren't great to begin with, but it has to really hurt not to have one of your two best players. There is a big dropoff from Brown to the other middles and Turner to Palash offensively. Palash is a smart hitter, but she isn't going to overpower you like Turner can at times. I hope that she and Brown get feeling better soon. They should be better next year with their new recruits, hopefully better health, and more experience, but it will be tough for them to make a late run this year.

What struck me about last night was how late our middles were blocking. I don't know how deceptive Illinois was setting, but the Badgers didn't have nearly as many well formed double blocks as they usually do. They need to correct that are they are in trouble against a good Minnesota team.
The Badgers didn't play inspired ball this weekend. I can't help but think that is because they were looking ahead to the Minnesota game. It's for second place in the Big 10. It should be a great match.

One thing I noticed about the blocking was that they were really selling out on Brown, which left the outsides one on one a lot of the time. Bazzetta made some nice sets to really have the Badger block and defense out of position when she used Brown as a decoy and pushed the ball to the outside. I agree, though, that the Badger block wasn't great after the first game. They will need to correct that against the Gophers. I have a feeling that they will; Reineke didn't play well against them the first time, and I would guess that she doesn't want that to happen again. Bladow will be an x-factor, as per usual. She started out really strong last night but struggled some as the match went on, hitting some balls out of bounds and getting tooled on the block. I have a feeling that she will do well on wednesday and make some big plays, just as she did against PSU.
