Our offense was pretty darn good but Cook certainly wasn't happy with our defense. I think A&M hit around .300 tonight.

The Aggies now officially miss the NCAA Tourney for the first time in 14 years.

Yeah, from what I saw, the Huskers were not very sharp on the defense. Those who see NU more often: do they teach Pavan to straddle the line when digging behind the block? She had dig attempts (some sucessful, some not) on a few balls that were clearly out. Looked like poor court awareness, but I don't know enough about NU's system. On another note, Jordan Larson showed great court vision in her hitting, it was impressive.

Superb offensive game by the Huskers. Defense was suspect. Looks as though the players are trying to react to the ball instead of picking up hitter's cues and positioning themselves before the ball is contacted. Unless they have reflexes and speed like Superman, they will have trouble digging a ball that is well hit, unless it is hit at them. Hence, the problem with tips. Too much ball watching.

Defense has not been suspect this season but certainly was last night. If the Huskers were playing perimeter defense which they usually do then Busboom was not getting to the corner. She really struggled last night, caused lots of communication errors. I'm disappointed that she hasn't improved as the season has progressed. Schwartz wasn't her sharp self either last night. Pavan is never going to be a defensive prowess---but given her ability to get kills attacking back row she's about gotta stay in there.

Certainly not Nebraska's best game defensively. Probably nitpicking, but when are we going to see Nebraska put it all together in a match?!? It hasn't happened since the Missouri game at the Coliseum in October. I have to put the blame on Coach Cook for this apparent lack of motivation and intensity which as been showing up in recent matches. It is probably the most important part of his job, getting the team prepared mentally to play each match like it's do-or-die.
Nebraska's going to get a rude wake-up call against some determined team in the NCAA tourney, and I'm worried they won't "wake-up" until it's too late, (see Colorado match).

Motivation and intensity is a coaching issue!!

I agree, too, Eov. The onus is on Cook! And he should apologize to Mancuso for railing on her when it was the other Dani that kept us out-of-system in games 2 and 3. Mancuso is one of three Huskers with such a great positive attitude out there. Good grief--she hit over .300...several at key times during the match! He might as well have shot a blow dart through her heart--and then the Bobby Knight shove???

Oh come one now. Lets not give these very anti Cook readers any more reason to dislike the NU program or him. I do agree that it is up to Cook to motivate these players. I was listening to Mendenhall talk about the team with Baylor about the special chemistry this team has much like the team of 2000. I have always had tremendous respect for Mendenhall so maybe she knows something I don't about this team. It seems to be they have trouble getting focused and emotionally charged for a match. If they do not learn quickly then its going to be an early departure.

Other than on the defensive end, the team was fine last night. As for a coach getting on a player, that happens. At this level, players has to be able to take what is coming at them. Cook has gone after just about everyone this year at some point. If you don't do your job, expect to hear about it. You may not like it, because no one does, but you have to be able to bounce back from it. I'm sure that what Cook says and does is not personal, just business. This is big time college volleyball and their are expectations. Some people hear about it more than others because the expectations on them are greater. If you don't want to get yelled at, do your job.

The idea that is the coach's responsibility to "motivate" is absurd, and frankly puts no responsibility on the athletes who decide matches (not coaches). If it is the coaches job, to teach, train, and develop players, and motivate them, what responsibility lies with the player? Players at this level are essentially paid (tuition, room, fees etc) to be motivated to excel. Did Michael Jordan need motivating? On top of that, this thread blames Cook for players lack of motivation, and in the same breath, rips him, for challenging Mancuso. Can someone explain that to me? I am worried about our future, if it is our responsibility to motivate kids, and raising your voice to challenge them to be better, more accountable, is out of line. Bollocks!
