Not that I think Hodge wasn't going to win anyway, but POY in Big Ten locks it up I think. How many Freshman have won POY in a major conference?

So, what if the Big Ten sputters in the postseason? Who else could win it?
Cusack at Florida if they make the Final Four? Anyone at UCLA? Washington? Stanford? Anyone in the Big 12? The candidate is likely going to be from an Elite 8 team.

Three freshmen that come to mind are 1) Ashley Engle My pick for FOY If she can get that hitting percentage up in the next few matches and keep Texas in the tourney, she's a good choice. An all-around and talented player. 2) Megan Hodge Most likely the National FOY. High-jumping, hard-hitting, athletic, dynamic, and impressive. 3) Taylor Carico For a freshman, she has some guts to swing on the second contact. Impressive court vision, setting decisions, and setting ability for someone so young. Who knew that a freshman could carry this team? 4) Elyse Cusack A long-shot, BUT she has great instincts and keeps Florida in LOTS of rallies. She must be frustrating to play against because she picks up EVERYTHING. So far, she has a limited amount of reception errors and an impressive DPG average. I THINK only Washington has a freshman playing. That would be Tamari Miyashiro (but she's a redshirt - graduated from high school in '05)

yeah Tama is a redshirt freshman. But she did on the pac10 all-freshmen team. do redshirts count towards the national foy too.

What the heck - I'll throw a name out.
Hana Cutura. I don't know if she'll get strong consideration given her decline during the Pac-10 season (and partially from the injury) but over the course of the season she's done quite well. She absolutely abused Pepperdine and had some impressive performances against good competition.
I don't know if there's a precedent for a NFOY candidate who wasn't conference FOY, but if anything Hana's season would make for a good test case.

Cusack will have a hard time making it if she wasn't even first or second team all conference.
I'm pretty sure you must be the region freshman of the year to be considered... and I wonder if the setter from Ky will take that spot since she was the SEC FOY.
(fwiw, I'm amazed that she DIDN'T make first or second team all-SEC)

So, that change can happn.

BC, she will not be eligible unless she is named Pac Region Freshman of the Year, and with the Pac 10 naming Taylor Carico its FOY, that is not likely (even with Rich Feller chairing the Regional committee). Quoting from the same AVCA Awards Manual you previously cited: REGION FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES Failure to meet the above stated rules and requirements may result in the disqualification of a student-athlete from AVCA All-Region and All-America consideration. Candidates for AVCA Region Freshman of the Year must be true freshman. Only one nominee per school is allowed per year. The AVCA National Freshman of the Year will be selected from the eight AVCA Region Freshmen of the Year award winners and must submit a 3-minute highlight tape to the AVCA in order to be eligible.

What I was getting at is that she was a lousy candidate for Pac-10 FOY because her performance tailed off precipitously during the conference season. However - she built up an impressive resume over the course of the season, and there does seem to be a precendent for a region FOY candidate who wasn't her conference's FOY.

Speaking of Engle as candidate, she'll be participating in a live chat at texassports.com/ tomorrow at 11:00 am CST (9:00 am PST).
