Kent State Golden Flashes - "Name submitted in a contest in 1926 by a KSU student. Winner received $25.00 prize. Subsequently perpetuated by Oliver Wolcott of the Kent Courier Tribune.
Our present mascot is "Flash," a giant furry golden eagle."
Trust me when I tell you that "Flash" is way better than some of the mascots that came before him!!

Also Davy Crockett and his group of Tennessee Volunteers that fought with the Texicans at the Alamo. I thought it had something to do with Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone as well but the real reason behind the Tennessee Volunteers is the entire state volunteered (who were eligible) for the civil war on one side or the other. They're called that because they VOLUNTEER for a butt-whippin' every time they play Florida. Just kidding, lunatics, so don't get your panties in a bunch.

That's OK, I'm content to have beaten you 3 times as much in the last large number of years as the rest of the conference put together, it's a relative thing.
Plus we ended bassically all of your incredibly awesome streaks.

it's interesting to see all the schools that costume mascot does not match their name. Like at utah they are the utes but the mascot is a red-tailed hawk named swoop. It's because it was thought to be offensive to have someone dressed as an indian run around at the games. what other schools are like this?

Stanford is the cardinal and has a tree.
Miami is the Hurricanes and has an Ibis.
Tennessee is the volunteers and has a dog named Smoky (both the real dog and a mascot suit dog).
Alabama is the Crimson Tide and has an elephant thing.
Virginia Tech is the Hokies and has a turkey thing. (Hokie is a made up word so it's impossible to have a Hokie costume).
Navy is the Midshipmen and has a goat.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure there are a bunch more.

Well, it means more than that now, if you have a mascot that is offensive then you are prevented from hosting the NCAA's and could potentially be kept from participating in any NCAA events. Illinois is going through this process right now with Chief Illiniwek. Georgia Tech has two mascots: the Rambling Wreck and the Yellowjacket. The Wreck gets driven into football games and the Yellowjacket is just someone in a bee suit.

I came across what looked like a University of Utah student last summer just south of Moab. Must have been her summer job or something. It did sort of ruin the illusion of cowboys being guys wearing cowboy hats. You can make out the "UTES" on the back of the visor in the original higher-res version. ![](http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/9138/img04108mz.jpg)

[If] you have a mascot that is offensive then you are prevented from hosting the NCAA's and could potentially be kept from participating in any NCAA events. Illinois is going through this process right now with Chief Illiniwek. If a Federal agency determined that Chief Illiniwek's presence was a civil rights violation and that finding were upheld in the Federal courts, the NCAA would have ground for further action against Illinois. Since an earlier attempt to oust the Chief as a civil rights violation failed... the Federal agency petitioned said that Chief Illiniwek's presence was not a civil rights violation... even the NCAA's hosting ban is on shaky legal ground. I'm an Illinois alum who doesn't love the Chief... and I hope this is the last academic year for him... but I despise the NCAA's high-handed political correctness. If they go after Illinois beyond what they've done already, they will solidify support for the Chief within Illinois and face millions of dollars in legal fees and potential punitive damages.
