Hello folks I am looking for any information regarding the pros and cons of the University of Wisconsin. I am interested in topics regarding the university academics, student life and community and of course the volleyball program. Thanks ;D

I'll briefly start and others can add more comments... Academics: UW is one of the top academic universities in the big ten - probably rivaled by Northwestern and Michigan. It's a huge research university - one of the biggest in the country. The business and engineering programs are great, as well as nursing and education. It's typically a somewhat difficult school to get into (the standards have gone up greatly since I attended). There's lots of graduate program opportunities and the medical school is very good as well. Student Life: Depending on what you are into, there's definitely something for you. If you like to party you've come to the right place - Halloween, Mifflin St Block party, etc... are all huge events on campus that draw 10's of thousands of people. If you're not as much of a partier, there's a big theater and cultural scene. Madison has a lot of local bands and artists that are pretty unique and fun to check out as well as lots of festivals and a weekly farmers market in the summer. There are about 40k undergrads (give or take), and most freshman live in the public dorms. The dorms are split into two sections of campus, southeast and lakeshore. If you're more into the state street, frat, party areas then southeast is for you. The lakeshore is much quieter and scenic. There's many paths and sightseeing places and it's generally more laid back. Community: Madison is a town of about 280,000 people with several decent sized suburbs surrounding it. It's a fairly liberal area. As far as weather goes, you definitely get to experiece all four seasons... winters can be harsh, but spring/summer/fall and the lakes and leaves make it worth it in the long run. Sitting out on the memorial union terrace enjoying a cold one is one of my best memories from college. Volleyball program: Of course, the fan support is great for the volleyball team... they are consistently #2-4 in national attendance and #1-2 in the big ten (depending on those pesky Gophers ). They play in the field house, which is a nice arena next to the football stadium. Only wrestling also uses the fieldhouse, so it's pretty much volleyball only in the early fall. They have great strength and conditioning programs for all sports, and a student athlete academic center that was recently expanded and remodeled. The coaching staff is great and you rarely ever have to bus to matches - for anything over a couple hundred miles they usually take charter planes from the university. I'm sure there's a ton of stuff that I'm missing, but check out this link to see a short video about the university courtesy of the uwbadgers.com webpage. Send me a PM if you have any other questions. www.uwbadgers.com/video_guide/Once at the link, you can select from the menu at the top to view specific sports, campus life, facilities or the city itself

IdahoPappy, The University of Wisconsin is a work of wonder, placed on an ismus , between two lakes and had a far superior graduation record than Hawaii. The weather is part of the Midwestern charm, albeit cold for five of the months, the changing seasons and glorious Spring and Summers....ah...... Dude, keep on surfing and don't forget to eat your poy. Mahalo!

UW is an awesome school and has one of the most beautiful campuses in the U.S. Madison is a very progressive midwestern city with lots of cultural attractions. Midsonians love their sports and support uw athletics like no where else in the country. There are wonderful health care facilities and entertainment venues, parks, beautiful lakes, bike paths, an arboretum, a zoo,and summers in Madison are full of fun. There is always something happening. And of course Madison supports UW volleyball and continues to attrack larger crowds each year.....

Anyone that finds near zero temperature charming is either drunk or stupid but there could be worse places to go to school.

In truth, the palm trees outside my window here in Madison look beautiful today in the morning sunlight.

I agree that Wisconsin is a pretty decent academic school, but this is because of their graduate schools rather than their undergraduate reputation. At the undergraduate level, Northwestern and Michigan are several quantum leaps more academically selective than the other Big 10 schools.

www.badgers.org.uk/badgerpages/american-badger-03.htmlMortality is heavy in the first two years of the badger's life, with starvation being a major cause of death. The American badger does not have many natural enemies, but humans do of course take their toll. Those badgers which survive all of these hazards may however live for quite a long time. The oldest wild badger on record lived to be 14, and several aged between 8 and 10 have been known, while in captivity, one badger is known to have reached 26 years of age.

Badgers are excellent diggers. Once, my grandpa saw one running across his place, by the time he would have run to the shed to get a shovel to dig up its den, it would have been gone (he'd tried before). So he shot it instead.
