Sources close to one of the local programs in Gopherville have informed me that Minnesota has received a commitment from a top '08 middle. Apparently this middle has played with the US HP program and many of the incoming recruits (NL) know her well. Anybody have any scoop on this?

I'd heard that a top middle was coming in this weekend, but that's about all I had heard. Could that be who you're talking about? And if so, do you know anything about her?

What do the Gophers have available regarding scholarships if an '08 middle just committed.

Gophers have 3 08 scholarships available, assuming they don't sign another 07, or get a 2-year (or more) transfer.
Blatt is the only announced 08 commitment so far.

Cowles is.
Tan may be getting scholarship while they have them available. She was probably supposed to get #13 (is that gone forever), I'd guess.
That's it.
Speaking of DSs and 2007 players, anyone ever hear about the transfer that was mentioned in a previous thread or was that just gossip. What about walk-ons? I've heard rumors of two. Plus, there's Roysland.
Roysland and Cowles would make a terrific pair of under-sized all-around OHs.

I have heard that the middle blocker they have just received a committment from is from Front Range volleyball club. Her last name is Filho?? (spelling) I could not find a roster for them on their website. If Roysland was on a womens basketball scholarship and plays a 5th year of volleyball then her scholarship will count against volleyball's total count in 2007. So in 2008 it would be Blatt and Filho for 2 out of 3 scholarships taken. I thnk the Pavan sister is the one visiting this week.

No, Roysland's scholarship will not count against VB. It will be carried by BB.

If you are right, it is Ariana Filho, 6-2 MB, Front Range. She was on the USA YNT that went to Europe this winter.

With Gibbemeyer in 07 and this Filio in 08, Minnesota is set for many years in the middle.

No, Roysland's scholarship will not count against VB. It will be carried by BB. The scholarship will count against volleyball if she has exhausted her basketball eligibility (4 years of play). The 5th year is picked up by the other sport. If she is playing both basketball and volleyball during the first 4 years the scholarship counts against basketball since they are higher on the heirarchy list in the NCAA rule book. It seems fairly clear in the NCAA rule book

So that works out, since the Gophers have the 1 slot.
What happens if this person is strictly a walk-on -- and I'm not saying she is. No scholarship $$ involved at all?

From what it looks like, if they pay their own way it would not count towards either sport. I am not sure how many players would pay for an entire year of school just to play another sport. Tough spot to be in since you do not know where you fit in on the depth chart.
