Hawaii has really set their line up for the next few years. They will be stacked with outside hitters in 2008. Houston and Hittle will be seniors and Ontiner will be a junior. Herring will come in as a highly touted freshman. Knowing Shoji, I think it is pretty safe to assume Ferrel will redshirt in 2007 so she will be available for play in 2008 as a freshman. If this is the case, then I would also like to see Shoji redshirt Kaufman this year. It's obvious she has talent but she still needs a lot of work and a 1 year off would help especially in the long run. I think it could make the difference between her becoming a good and a great player.

Hawaii has in the past, had several transfers pay their own in the first year and got the scholarship in the second year. Seems that Otineru would get the scholarship as Dave was probably talking to her from early on in the year, whereas Brandt was a total surprise.

Gee ... Cubi-Otineru was somewhat of a surprise. But does this mean that Brandt is walking on?
I'm happy though ... looks like the Wahine outside hitting group could be as power-packed at deep as its ever been with Houston, Hittle, Cubi-Otineru, Ferrell, and Kaufman. And then Herring the next season. GEEEZE! Seven hitters in the mix (including Keefe). Good luck on finding playing time ... a 6-2 would be nice ... with hitters subbing in the front row for the setters. No?
Haha... rambling on ... but I must say ... it must SUCK to be a Wahine backrow player. The passing should be solid with Houston, Hittle, Cubi-Otineru, and Herring. All are as good, if not better than the other DS except for Ka'aihue and Lee.
The other DS don't have a chance. =(
In any case, I am excited. The Wahine have reloaded. I could really see a brand new kind of Wahine team come 2008 and on. Dynamic and athletic. WEEEE!

Cubi-Otineru has to be on scholarship. Walk-ons do not sign letters-of-intent, and the school cannot make any announcement until they enroll in school.

ladeda, so everyone from last year is expected to return? Ong wasn't on the spring tournament. I wonder if she'll be back. Also, is Ka'aihue expected to contribute this year?

HONOLULU - University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball coach Dave Shoji announced the signing of Stephanie Ferrell and Aneli Cubi-Otineru to national letters of intent Friday.
Ferrell is a 6-1 outside hitter from Locke High School in Los Angeles. She also plays for the SCVC club team. Cubi-Otineru is a junior college transfer from Southern Idaho. She helped the team to a National Junior College Athletic Association championship in 2005 before redshirting the 2006 season. The 2005 Punahou graduate was the 2003 Hawai`i high school player of the year, and originally signed with Hawai`i out of high school before deciding to attend Southern Idaho.
Ferrell and Cubi-Otineru are added to UH's 2007 recruiting class that included Liz Ka`aihue, of Punahou High School in Honolulu, and Amanda Simmons, of Elk Grove High School in Des Plains, Ill., who both signed in the early signing period in October.
No mention of Brandt, is she really attending UH next semester? Or as other's mentioned walking on so she didn't have to have a forma signing.

Heard from a coach that Brandt has committed to Hawaii and will be moving to Hawaii this summer. Apparently all of the schools recruiting her, including Hawaii, offered her a scholarship. Several top 20 schools were after her, this is another top recruit for Hawaii- very athletic and highly competitive player.

Wow, exciting....this brings the question on the setters postion. Who will really set if Brandt comes this season. Mafua is athletic, big, and very promising but on the other hand, Brandt is experienced with real playing time and also very athletic and promising as well for the position. So who will set?....I'm goin to make a poll on this......lol!...No really....
