I wasn't "talking" to "you" "specifically". Also, I would have prefaced my comment with "Gorf, you dumb bleep..."
Regardless, I don't think the fact it was Barbie's first final appearance had a lot to do with it. And, no, we wouldn't consider her a freshman.

As for Barboza "choking" the first time vs. Nebraska, they played in the AVCA tournament and it was the second match of the season for both teams, or at least for Stanford. Both teams played like it was only the second match of the season, with plenty of mistakes and errant timing on both sides of the net. Better than the night before, but give everybody a break here, on both sides. Didn't see the championship match, and too distressed to watch a replay, so no comment on that. Would be interesting to see Pavan and Klineman hit against each other for a few rotations this year.

I wouldn't say that Barboza choked against Nebraska in the Finals. The Husker block did a good job against her and she was pretty ineffective. But I don't recall if she made a ton of hitting errors or just couldn't put the ball away. As for Larson in 2005 Final, her hitting was an offensive disaster. Didn't she only rack up one kill? And she missed all her serves.

That said, she more than made up for it in the 2006 Final.

Great passers, servers, and terminators. I don't think they are in the same league as a Houghtelling or Pavan for strictly net dominance, but their overall game have to be compared to the best that have played the game.

Let's look at the actual results: Stanford | ATTACK |SET| SERVE |SRV|DEF| BLOCK |GEN ## Name GP| K E TA PCT| A| SA SE| RE|DIG|BS BA BE|BHE ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 Barboza, Cynthia.... 4| 12 8 40 .100| 1| 0 3| 1| 7| 0 3 0| 0
Looks to me like a combination of both the things you couldn't recall -- only a few more kills than errors, and a lot of attempts that were dug or blocked back into play.

To be fair, lets put up Larson's vs. Washington too: Nebraska | ATTACK |SET| SERVE |SRV|DEF| BLOCK |GEN ## Name GP| K E TA PCT| A| SA SE| RE|DIG|BS BA BE|BHE|POINTS 10 Larson, Jordan...... 3| 1 5 20 -.200| 1| 1 4| 0| 12| 0 2 0| 0| 3.0

If Larson had made the 20 aditional attacks Barboza took could she have gotten her attack percentage up to 0.100?

No way... Nebraska shouldn't have won the NC last year. Had it not been for home court, and suspect officiating (3 BHE's called against the best setter in the nation), UCLA would have won another NC.
No one in Nebraska wants to admit it... But it's true. They know. How does the best setter get three BHE's called against her.

I guess you didn't notice any of the suspect officiating that went against the Huskers in that match? Have you taken a look at the list of past champions that won when they also had home court advantage similar to Nebraska's (ie, in same state) or actually on their own home court? Year | Champion | Host | HCA | 1981 | USC | UCLA | Same City | 1982 | Hawai | Pacific | None | 1983 | Hawai | Kentucky | None | 1984 | UCLA | UCLA | Own Court | 1985 | Pacific | Western Michigan | None | 1986 | Pacific | Pacific | Own Court | 1987 | Hawaii | Indianapolis | None | 1988 | Texas | Minnesota | None | 1989 | LBSU | Hawaii | None | 1990 | UCLA | Maryland | None | 1991 | UCLA | UCLA | Own Court | 1992 | Stanford | New Mexico | None | 1993 | LBSU | Wisconsin | None | 1994 | Stanford | Texas | None | 1995 | Nebraska | Massachusetts | None | 1996 | Stanford | Cleveland State | None | 1997 | Stanford | Washington State | Same Conference | 1998 | LBSU | Wisconsin | None | 1999 | Penn State | Hawaii | None | 2000 | Nebraska | Virginia Commonwealth | None | 2001 | Stanford | San Diego State | Same State | 2002 | USC | New Orleans | None | 2003 | USC | Dallas | None | 2004 | Stanford | LBSU | Same State | 2005 | Washington | San Antonio | None | 2006 | Nebraska | Omaha | Same State |
Since you were referring to UCLA; two of their 3 championships were played on their own court.

I personally think both of the players being references in the recent posts are amazingly good and find it a pleasure to watch their matches. Of course, being biased I tend to prefer watching my favorite teams and players.

Both players as well as their teams are the cream of the crop even when we spend so much time critiquing them. Despite all the flaws we find in them wouldn't you want them on your team? Absolutely and if you say no I can only say "Liar, liar, your pants are on fire!" ESTRELLA

I think Larson/Barboza are two of the future hopes for Team USA given their overall balance in skill levels.
