Thanks BiK, where did you find these?
I though Elsea played in this match ... but no stats?!!
Wow, Lewis was out dug 31-22, out blocked 1.5 to 5, out aced 7-2 (but BYU had 5 more service errors) and out hit by .200.

starbulletin.com/2004/05/07/sports/story1.htmlCougars ground Flyers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By Cindy Luis cluis@starbulletin.com Brigham Young got what it wanted in last night's rematch of the 2003 national championship: revenge. Fernando Pessoa and Jonathan Hillman each had 12 kills as No. 1 BYU swept defending champion Lewis 30-21, 30-28, 30-21 in the second semifinal of the NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Cougars (28-4) advance to the title match for the second consecutive year -- fourth in six seasons -- and take on conference rival Long Beach State (28-6). Tomorrow's 4 p.m. championship will be a rematch of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation final won last Saturday by the host Cougars in four. It is the 19th time in the 35-year history of the tournament that it is an all-MPSF final. The Cougars won all three meetings with the 49ers this year. The Flyers (19-14) were led by Fabiano Barreto's 10 kills. Joe Hillman added 11 kills for BYU. A pro-Lewis crowd of 2,675 saw the Flyers mount their best challenge in Game 2. Lewis led 26-25, only to have a kill by Hillman tie it at 26. It was tied twice more, the last at 28 when Jonathan Alleman's cross-court shot landed just in to give the Cougars game point. BYU needed just one chance to end it, with Victor Batista and Alleman stuffing Barreto's line shot to do it. The Flyers, who had won their last four, didn't fold. They led until the middle of the third game, when the Cougars took control. BYU turned a 16-14 deficit into a 19-16 lead behind the serving of Batista. Jeff Soler's 10th kill ended the run but not the Cougar momentum. BYU went on another run, this one behind the serving of Hillman. He served for four straight points for a 24-17 lead and the Cougars never looked back. Batista held up pretty well, even though he was getting booed all night by crowd. I heard references to his age quite a few times in the crowd. He is so skinny and uncoordinated looking... it's hard to believe he IS that old.

after looking at the stats, it looks like Soler did just as well as any BYU player. He just needs to block better. If he could get his blocking down, there would be no reason for him not be an All American. Fabby did ok too, but it's the whole middle situation. Too many freshman and inexperienced players on that court wearing red. They will be back.

Lewis played a good game and a half. They should have taken game two...Two key errors, one by Jared Dayton and the obvious one by Fabby on Game point(tough set). Lewis just didn't have the weapons that BYU had.
I think this year was different from last year mentally, I think they had to be happy just to be there this year. especially considering the start they had.
Soler played real well, Stuntz passed well and had some great digs. Fabs and Dayton were up and down, Sisk had some good and bad moments as well. The middles were only a factor in game two.
BYU...Batista was pretty impressive. Alleman, I don't know how he does such a good job he doesn't look like much. When the passing was on, Moreno did a fantastic job. Hillman showed his experience and was very efficient.

Batista looks like the twin brother of Eric Daly, a guy who played for MIT back in the late 80's, had a brief stint as a MB on the National Team, then became their technical coordinator for a long time under both Sturm and Beal. Last time I talked with him, he was doing the same thing for Scates at UCLA. Don't know if he's still there. Really intelligent guy - probably one of the smartest guys to play for the USA Men, along with Dan Hanan and Scott Fortune.
EDIT: Aldis Berzins is a smart cookie too, some kinda computer software whiz. He came up with the Scout program that the USA teams used for a long time.

I didn't think Lewis looked too bad, although it was really obvious that BYU was not going to let what happened last year, happen again.
Sisk, looked decent setting and I thought all their hitters looked pretty good as well. BYU just had more offensive weapons than Lewis.

ok, I've watched most of the game and here are my thoughts. Lewis played well. They should have had the second game and did very well, the first part of the third game. Midwest you were right, BYU just had more gun. I think the BYU's Burke is the one you forget about and he does alot of damage because he is quiet and just slips in when you least expect it. Good player. Moreno has a pretty decent one handed set. Batista is just a blast to watch and BYU flows on the court very well. That comes with playing together for a while. Moreno has grown up since last year. Lewis did great considering the majority of BYU players were on the same team last year and Lewis had 3. Ryan, Fabby and Soler. They couldn't even use Elsea, which was their experienced middle. Enrique made errors that are just errors that inexperienced players would make, he'll be good. Soler did well. He had a lot to prove and proved it. I didnt' see the same flow on the court on the Lewis side that BYU had, which Lewis can have, I just didn't see it. Lewis also has hard choices to make. You have your strong starters, Fabby, Sisk, Ryan, Soler....then you have a bunch of maybes...do you use elsea (knees) Greg, or Enrique. Outside hitters...Dayton or Bergman. Too many choices and you have to have the right combination. You have BYU and other teams...there is no question who is on the court. Last comment, I thought the responses that Dave D. gave for using foreign players was a good one. I think he choose his words wisely. I didn't like his shirt ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ) ok, I more comment. I noticed all season (and in seasons past) Lewis middle hitters often hit the net on their attacks. I wonder if they would be more efficient with a higher set to the middle? Just a thought.
