Based on the ESPN2 broadcast of LBSU vs. Penn State, I have a few comments. - Heather Cox is annoying. So is the guy whose name i can't remember (just remembered, Chris Marlow). They spend way too much time talking about off topic BS when there are events in the game that require attention
- ESPN Has some very nice camera angles, but...
- ESPN doesn't show nearly enough replays or footage FROM the alternate camera angles. The blocking cam is amazing and very underused, as are a few of the overhead diagonal views and the ground-level view from the 10-foot line. Instant replays are a must when they are primarily showing the game from the upper view level of the arena. IMO on almost every play there should be something worthy of replay
- Many of the replay footage ESPN used was for the wrong part of the play and didn't at all illustrate what the announcers were talking about. At several points there were controversial calls or amazing digs etc... during the middle of the play and on the replay, only the termination was shown (which was much less interesting)
Anybody else have something that they liked or were bothered by in the broadcast?

Where is John Madden with the magic pen to show what guys in the trenches are doing!

Funny about John Madden!
I was thinking some of the same things about the broadcast. I'm thankful that they are showing the matches but I think we are missing a golden opportunity to promote the sport it's uniqueness.
I agree, Cox and Marlow need to explain more about what's happening during the games. And I agree the replay could/should be a lot better, giving people the opportunity to see the athleticism involved to make a great block, hit over the block or just jump "out" of the gym on a hit.
I had some other thoughts, but since I didn't go to bed until after 3 a.m., I can't remember them now!

They worked for me! They were great. Especially the last one Pretty funny! ;D I got home late so I was only able to watch part of the third game. I taped it though and I am taping today. Based on the few minutes I was watching I would have to agree with everyone's comments about the announcing. Too bad they cannot keep Marlowe (he is not that bad) and add the Hawaii announcer. I miss "he crushed the coconut"! Also, Paul Sunderland would not be a bad addition (he used to work with Marlowe on broadcasts and is now one of the announcers for the LA Lakers season tv broadcasts). I will have more comments about the matches and the announcing when I watch the tapes!

I'd just like to add that Cox and Marlowe have been blasted in the past for not focusing on the technical part of volleyball (in the woman's game).
I think that there OLD style of explaining the game was much better than last night's style, where they concentrated more on "tentativeness" and the "feeling" of the game.
I think what happened is, that neither of them really enjoy the men's sport-calling as much as women's. I noticed Heather yawning a couple of times while doing color commentary. Chris seemed like he was sticking to his script a little too much (first serve of the game he talked about how tentative so and so was and how that was going to lose the match for them).
I think Chris Marlowe (who also announces AVP still, am I correct?) is a great volleyball commentator. Heather Cox, eh... she gets overly tongue tied and her voice is annoying to me. I've seen her on more football sidelines than volleyball sidelines, as well. But, I can't think of a female color commentator that is as good as her... any suggestions?
Regarding camera's etc. I didn't see much of them... just a little of game 1. I did see them shooting (sat behind the boom end-court camera/overhead diagonal camera... in fact, he almost hit me with it on a pan out. He had some very good shots, that I think could have been used.
The best camera work I've seen for a volleyball match was Hawaii @ UCLA's by OC16... great camera work (and with radio on listening to Scott Robbs, it ended up being enjoyable to listen to also).

Volleyball can only improve if the rulemakers allowed only backrow attacks and eliminated the rotation rules. Right now, it's just serve, pass, set, and spike for the kill! Yeah, the subtlety of blocking schemes and the like can be enjoyed, but only for so long.

Heather Cox and Chris Marlowe were bored. Many people don't go to men's vb matches because they get bored. Hence, my response.

True dat. I am indeed lovesick like a slivering snake in a wet and tropical rainforest. My deepest feelings have been exposed for all to wonder and gasp. I deny nothing. How can I? It's all true.

The feelings are mutual. The "Ignore List" is a sham!

These pics all came in great. I am curious as to your hardware/software combo to get these as images. What is your motivation for taking the screen captures? I like the debate, anything further to add anyone with thoughts that matter? (Which includes all not on my ignore list).

I just have a TV card on my computer with included software that lets me take snapshots (WinDVR it's called). I started taking the pictures initially to just get some cool shots from the game but once the poor usage of alternate camera angles and replays started pissing me off I focused on that instead. Watching the BYU Lewis game now, and these problems are even worse in that game. There was an incredible block by the Lewis guys and all we got to see was the skybox view... ugh

Nice job OC24! I'd like to see this link replaced with the shot from today's replay of the second semifinal where the camera was fixed on Dave while he was picking his nose (with a tissue, but still) during the match!! Come on ESPN2, don't you have some sense of decency then to show this on National TV!?
