Warrior Volleyball Adds Schkud To Roster For 2005 HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team announced that Jake Schkud, a 6-5 outside hitter from UC Santa Barbara, will be joining the Warrior squad for the 2005 season. Schkud, a former high school teammate of Warrior setter Brian Beckwith, sat out his freshman year at UCSB but entered the squad as a 2003 Mission League MVP. In addition Schkud was a member of the 2003 CIF championship team and a 2003 LBC Junior Olympcs gold medallist. "He is someone we recruited as hard as we could last year and it was close, but he ended up at a different school." Said head coach Mike Wilton, "After one year he has decided to come here and we're really happy about that." Schkud, who will be spending the summer training with the Junior National Team said about his transfer, "I'm really excited to transfer to Hawai`i, to play for a world class coaching staff, and to play with all the great guys on the team. Like every guy on this squad, I want to win and bring the National Championship to Hawai`i in 2005. We have the coaching staff, the players, but most of all we have very supportive boosters and fans. Go Warriors!" uhathletics.hawaii.edu/news.html?p=13022Any UCSB fans have any info on him. I remember there was talk about a transfer but I couldn't find the thread.

Dang...three UCSB transfers in three years...UH is picking their pocket.
Still waiting for some middles to show up...looks like Thomas may be back to the middle?

Gauchos were sad to see Schkud transfer. He was hoping to get some playing time his freshman year. When staff thought it in the team's best interest to red shirt him, he was of course dissapointed. He worked hard during practice, but was getting a sense that breaking into the starting lineup was going to be a real challenge, even for next year. Clearly he has the potential. It's too bad SB wasn't able to convince him to stick around for at least one more year. He would have been a contributor. For him, it'll be like the ol' days, back with Beckwith.

They reallllly needed someone else to hit besides Patak last season. They had little chance of being competitive without him. And imagine a Schkud playing with him when he was healthy. What were they waiting for? and now they've lost him. Something was wrong in River City.

I hope Jake has some good passing skills. He will make a great addition to the team, if he can pass.
I would still like to see Delano back in the Middle. Hawaii looks tough on paper. Hopefully, Coach Wilton can get these guys to become "mentally tough". They were too soft mentally. Little things like crying if they get pulled from the line up; leaving their jersey at the hotel; getting busted for bring beer in the hotel etc.
Mentally tough and focus and you can bring back the National Championship to the Islands.
******************************************** I just got back from Mariners Point, South Mission Beach, San Diego watching several former Hawaii players compete in the AVP: Jason Olive, Curt Vauhan, Brenton Davis, Tory Tukuafu, Cheryl Boyer. Hanging out with Alan Alan, Eric Sato and my son Kimo Tuyay.
Should be interesting on Sunday. Bookumdanoaloha.

Jake is a fine all around person and player, but passing is not one of his skills. That's not something he did as a junior in either club or HS. At the college level he's best suited to play opposite, but can play outside as long as he doesn't have to pass. I will say that he is a better passer than Thomas. There are several problems at UCSB, one of whom is Preston. He gets decent recruiting classes, but rarely do you see one of his players improve measureably during the time that they are there. Because he gets good players, his teams are competitive, but rarely upper echelon. This is partially due to Preston, but can also be due to the IV party atmosphere. Sheltered HS athletes have a tough time adjusting to the freedom offered in this isolated college community. Academics also take a back seat. In speaking to one of the freshmen parents early in the season, I was told that 5 out of 6 freshmen recruits had not achieved a 2.0 in their first quarter, and that there was no study hall for the players. That parent was very upset that Preston was not more involved with the new recruits. This could have as much to do with the transfer as V-ball. Not that UH is itself known for its academics. As a long time Bows fan, I would prefer that they recruit from the mainland rather than foreign players. There are plenty of great players who would have loved to play in that atmosphere but were unrecruited. I don't buy that they can't afford to recruit here.

Well I would also would think a trip to California where talent is profuse is cheaper than flying all the way to Europe to focus on one or two players.
But it still is not an easy thing for ANY UH coach to recruit on the mainland when you are competing with a couple dozen others schools AND the fact Hawaii is so far away. If you think about it, almost every UH sport has foreign athletes. In fact at a point, the Men's Basketball and Volleyball team's rosers were almost half foreign born players. Although this is not the case at the moment. MBBall has two while MVBALL will have a bout five or so.
For UH Coaches I think its the fact they can get some very good players from Europe or Asia AND the athletes in return get an education in paradise. The athletes in Europe have very little oppurtunity in playing their sport AND an education. UH coaches have def. used that to there advantage.
Getting back to UCSB....damn I can't believe 5 of 6 freshmen weren't even getting a 2.0. That's pretty pathetic but EVEN if UCSB is a party school, with the proper guidance any coach can ATLEAST focus on academics. After all it should ALWAYS be academics before athletics when it comes to college athletes.
I't's good to know a quality player like Schkud is coming in, BUT he may not get the playing time he wants here either. There are gonna be a dozen outsiders next season and there are three outside positions....

Most of us remember Jake as a lightning fast MB with hops. He transitioned to outside in his senior year of high school and also for his club team wher he made great improvement. Probably a smart move to switch since he isn't a huge mb in terms of height for college. But he can sure block like he's much taller and he has the speed any college coach would love!
Anyhow, he sure must have worked hard his senior year because at JO's lst year he looked like he'd been playin outside forever and his passing looked pretty good to us.
Since he redshirted this past year (bad idea UCSB) i heard he worked extra hard on his passing and his swing. He made the final 18 usav mens jr natl team so Speraw must see big potential in Jake.
Well, UH's Wilton said he was going concentrate on passing since his boys were a little weak in that department last season. We know that's true. If anyone is worried about Jake's passing, forget-about-it! Wilton is going to turn Jake and the rest of 'em into passing machines.

Oh I forgot, UH will have more experience under their belts and lots of depth next year. You're right though. Jake will have to earn his spot. He knows work ethics. He'll be ready. (He better get ready for Frank Street.) We know Wilton will put the best guy out on the court.

It really entertains me sometimes to hear some of the "information" that gets put on this forum. Just a few things from first hand knowledge....... the whole 5 out of 6 freshman who recieved lower than a 2.0 is total jargin. I will not say who got what but ATLEAST 4 of the freshman DID receive higher than a 2.0 and for a school whose average GPA to be accepted was a 3.9, thats pretty good. Preston DID assigned study hall hours for the first two quarters with a MINIMUM of 9 hours a week. Secondly Jake Schkud is a wonderful player and an even better person but I am curious as to who northshore thinks Schkud should have started over. Like it has been discussed, Jake can't pass very well at this point in time and that left him with the opposite spot who was dominated by Patak. Patak who entered the MPSF with a mighty presence this year, was himself a redshirt last year much like Jake was. Preston recruited Jake for a reason and part of Preston's plan was to build up his skills first before unleashing him. It is a shame to see Jake leave UCSB and UH should feel honored to have him on the roster.

You better work hard with your passing at Hawaii. If you can't pass you're not going to play - simple as that. Delano, Pedro and Bender will hold their positions even though they are terrible passers. Move Delano back to the Middle and bring in a passer and you'll see alot of success. With Delano, Mau and Dio Dante in the Middle Hawaii will have the luxury of having experience and athletic Middles. Delano was horrible at the outside when it came to blocking. Blocking on the outside is entirely different game than blocking in the middle. If Jake can't pass he'll have a tough time starting. Now if he can pass, then he might be able to take Benders spot. Watch out for the Finland player to have an impact on the team, I hear he is a good passer. Lotsa players on the roster, let see who has a good Fall Season. Bookumdanoaloha

It is a shame to see Jake leave UCSB and UH should feel honored to have him on the roster. Have watched UCSB men for almost 2 decades now. Honestly never seen Kenny ever "develop" a player in their four year career. When UCSB has a good squad, it is usually because the players decide they want to compete and play, and not from anything Preston does that is different or new from previous years. Look - good years like 1996 they had Rodgers, Treahy, Harris, Velasco. Ya those guys could be @$$%*!*s and trash-talkers, but they also played hard and were self-motivated. Another good year they had was in 2002 with Rivera and company. They've also had terrible years with teams full of posers like Matt Riley, Zegarra, Kohl, Grienbenow, etc.etc.etc. Guys who were more concerned with looking good for their bimbos in the stands and getting drunk after the match than they were about playing hard and actually trying to beat other teams. You guys forget that good players don't only transfer out of UCSB to go to Hawaii, Jocquin Acosta transferred out of Goleta and won a national championship with BYU.
