VBcrusin made predictions for this week, but they were in another post, so I thought that I would start a new thread to get things going.

Re: Long Beach Takes Stanford in 4. Tarr Tears Up « Reply #3 on: Feb 15th, 2003, 02:32am »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey Beachy,
Congratulations on Long Beach over Stanford. I predicted the LB win, and this week's record, I was 8 - 1 for all MPSF matches( 9 -1 if Pepperdine beats UCI tomorrow). My only loss was to predict Hawaii sweeping Northridge. Northridge beat Hawaii, but tonight's match looks like UH is leading...what's with the black out in the first close game? Hawaii eventually won.
For your information, mvbdad beat me this week...he predicted a perfect score 9 - 0 (10 - 0 if Pepperdine beats UCI tomorrow). He said that Hawaii would split with Northridge. This is fun...Does anyone else want to compete with us with their predictions? How about Bookum? What about you Beachy?
My next week's predictions: Hawaii will split with BYU Northridge over Long Beach Northridge over UCSD Long Beach over UC Santa Barbara Pacific over UCI Pacific over UCLA Pepperdine over USC UCI over Stanford Stanford over UCLA UC Santa Barbara over UCSD
Long Beach has a lot of young talent...I look to them next year to be #1 or #2...however, they could be the spoilers this year. We'll see. There still is a lot of season left. It's an exciting season...GO EVERYONE!

Re: Long Beach Takes Stanford in 4. Tarr Tears Up « Reply #5 on: Feb 15th, 2003, 07:00am »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do I dare take a stab at predictions? I don't get to see them play, so it will be based on what I have read (and maybe a little bit of wishful thinking)
Next week's predictions: Hawaii will split with BYU Long Beach over Northridge Northridge over UCSD Long Beach over UC Santa Barbara UCI over Pacific Pacific over UCLA Pepperdine over USC UCI over Stanford Stanford over UCLA UC Santa Barbara over UCSD
Northridge will be tired from their exciting trip to Hawaii and that will give Long Beach the edge. UCI is looking to return to their winning ways and will take it out on Pacific.

Okay vballmom, vballah, and anyone else... This will be FUN "Prediction" competition starting this week (Feb. 17th - 22nd). This contest will be just for the MPSF matches, and each week we'll crown the winner as the BEST VOLLEYBALL PROGNOSTICATING FAN (B.V.P.F. for short). At the end of the season, we'll crown the fan with the best record as the King or Queen of Volleyball Fans! Heck, I'll even give a prize to the winner (prize will be determined by vbcrusin) Thank you, vballmom, for starting the thread. It should be interesting to see if loyal fans will predict against their own teams. Let the games begin!

Okay, here is my effort....but I must qualify this...I am a terrible prognosticator! But for the sake of argument this is what I think.....with a slight favoritism toward LBSU.
LBSU over CSUN UCLA over UCSB....Bruins are getting healthier UCI ov UOP...well matched in skills, though BYU over UH...this one is in the Fieldhouse, their smaller gym but better for fan input Pepp over USC....nuff said CSUN over UCSD but still never overlook any MPSF foe UH over BYU...this in Marriott Center, never good for the Cougars UOP over UCLA LBSU over UCSB...I won't be in attendance for this one Stanford over UCLA...they are not that healthy yet... UCSB over UCSD
Good luck to all. Go Beach

Kinda like the contest Rick Kern runs for the post season in Women's Div 1. Too bad there isn't a men's site like Rich Kern's.
I'd love to prognosticate with you folks, but I just started following the men's game recently, so I'll leave it to you seasoned "pros" to do this, so I can learn. ;D

I'm in!!!!
A suggestion or 2 from the midwest boy. Maybe include some of the MIVA or EIVA teams, but only the 1's in he top 15. Or just make it all teams in the top 15 for that week according to the AVCA.
If not...cool, but a true fan of the game of Volleyball should know a bit about all teams in the top 15!
Later
Roofan
p.s. I would have missed Loyola over Ball State last week as I'm sure many others would have as well.

Hey Roofan,
You're right about a true fan would include all teams in the country, and my prediction contest is not meant to ignore or "snub" the MIVA and EIVA. There are really good teams in the Midwest and East, BUT I haven't seen them for myself in person. I LOVE VOLLEYBALL and have attended matches of all MPSF teams(and have several favorites). I attended the last four NCAA Finals, and was impressed with the various Ohio, Ball, Fort Wayne, Lewis, Loyola and Penn State teams. I wish I lived closer, like you, to attend those matches, but since I live on the West Coast, I somewhat limited to the teams I watch. I wish they had an all-volleyball TV program (for every team) throughout the season, because I would be a "volleyball junkie."
I've been pretty accurate in my predictions based on "firsthand" match attendance, knowledge of the various players, and emotional team play (momentum) in the MPSF only. Sorry to limit my contest to the MPSF only, but if I opened it up to the MIVA & EIVA, I would only GUESS at the predictions based on what is written in news articles. I usually ignore team rankings, because it doesn't reflect the true picture of how the teams fare in their matches. Case in point, Hawaii.
In the pre-season, everyone thought that they would dominate this year...an unbeatable team. Look at where they are now. They split matches with Northridge, Stanford and UCI, and they will be beaten many more times this year, but somehow, they will be a force tournament time. How can I predict the MidWest and Eastern Teams if I'm unfamiliar with their team play?
With you living in the MidWest, I bet you'd do great in EIVA & MIVA matches. I read all your posts so I know you're very knowledgeable in the Volleyball arena. Forgive me for not predicting the Top 15, but I'll only stay with what I know...the MPSF. There are GREAT teams in this country and they aren't all on the West Coast, which is why I attend the NCAA Finals. I only wish they had a sweet 16 tournament, so we could see more teams around the country. Maybe you can start a thread for the MIVA & EIVA?...I'd try out my guesses, but you'd definitely have an advantage over me...just as I have a slight advantage over you with the MPSF.
I enjoy your posts, even IF we don't agree all the time. ;D

I'm glad to see this got going ;D Thank you VBCrusin!! I predict that UCLA will beat UCSB, but it will be very close. Good luck to everyone! Roofan - I agree with VBCrusin - you should start a contest with the MIVA and/or EIVA teams. Get everyone involved

SweetieVBFan, the only teams playing each other twice this week are BYU vs. Hawaii at BYU. No one else can split. It would be nice if they could end in a tie, then no one would have to be the loser, but it just doesn't work that way

Vbcruisin
That's all good with me on the MPSF. Even though I am not fortunate enough to see teams 1st hand like you and the numerous others who get to see great action of the MPSF week in and out, I'll do my best to keep up with all you "West Coast Biased Folk!" LOL ;D
Can U do me a small favor, and post each set of matches for the week, so I can know who is playing where etc. For example my prediction for the BYU-UH matches would likely be predicated on where they are held.
As for an EIVA/MIVA contest, I don't think that is a good idea for a few reasons. 1st, not even a Midwest fan like myself really feels like predicting the winner of a Findlay-Clarke match or a D'Yourville-Ramapo match! 2nd, many of the matches each week ARE easy pickins when a Lewis takes on Mercyhurst or a Penn State takes on a St. Francis. That's why I thought maybe a weekly top 15 contest would be fair for all, since many of the top 15 schools east of Provo try to play as tough of a schedule as possible.
I too enjoy bantering with many of you on this forum, especially when everyone just sticks to good clean Volleyball knowledge!!!
Roofan
p.s. My Final 4 prediction...Pepperdine over Penn State 3-0, Hawaii over Lewis 3-1. Then in the grudge rematch, Pepp upends UH 3-1.
