Great win for team USA and the double sub worked great tonight. I like Lang Ping's strategy of splitting time between Willoughby and Glass. Minus a few errors by each of them, they both held their own. I like the fact that teams couldn't get too good of a look at Willoughby as we will definitely need her against more formidable opponents. I do have to give it to Japan as they play tremendous defense and make things so difficult.

A high quality match, much more exciting than the Russia/ItA match. Japan actually played well in this loss. Both Bown and Scott were very much involved in the offense. Great Start for USA.
The matchup against Cuba will be tough. Cuba played very well against Poland and Carillo is on fire, hitting at 85%. Two of my fav team playing against each other, I do not know who I should root for.

I must admit that I was impressed by Bown today. As for the team, they were able to come back from behind in the last two sets with great blocking. I think our defense is still somewhat weak and there were tips that we missed. Our attack needs to improve as welll but blocking was really the key against Japan, who basically choked.
I wonder why Nnamani didn't come out to play. Good move by JLP to have Davis as the libero instead of Sykora.

Japan both blocked and played exceptional defense which made putting the ball down all the more difficult for the US team. Willoughby had a tremendous offensive presence and really provided a spark for the team when she came on. I think this match also shows just how valuable it is to have players like Glass/Willoughby and Berg/AhMow who can come in at different times and don't really alter team chemistry but can really add just a little something different when things aren't going according to plan. The middles for both teams were extremely effective on offense whenever they got a good look. My biggest concern, besides US lapse in passing in the middle of the match was Tayyiba Haneef. At the end of the first game she looked very animated and you could see how that effected her play, she kind of had a lapse through the rest of the match and was very up and down. The US needs her to put the ball down consistently and she needs to steadily improve for the team to win. For the first match of the Olympics for team USA I would say there were a lot of positives and there are a lot of improvements that need to be made, particularly serving and passing. The US I think defends better against an offense like Cuba's and if they pick up their passing I think they can definitely beat the Cubans. Congrats USA! Get some rest and let's get it going in two days!.
GO USA!
