I find the attitude on this site to be quite entertaining. Especially when talking about the women in these olympics. It went from, USA Women are horrible. To USA Beating cuba and playing china in the gold medal match. It's funny to me. Well, 95% of VT'ers are drama queens, anyway. They try to disguise their posts as legit analysis or technical what-nots, but they are just homer fans with a little bit of knowledge of the game. Enough to be dangerous, but not really enough to be meaningful - in the end, they can't separate their emotional investment in a team or a match from the objective analysis of why things occur.

From my perspective, some of the American posters here act just like the American media. Always 2nd guessing and taking the negative approach when you don't win. Is it because our American society conditioned us to a "win or nothing" approach or is it because "its all about me" that one needs to spout off to get attention?
From my short (20+ yrs) experience, the game is about 90% positive attitude and 10% physical play. If there is dissension among the ranks, then chances are good that your team will fail. I'd love to play your team and have you bring down the rest of your team and lose.
USA fans need to get more vocal in their support behind their teams. Brasil, China, and Cuba fans will be loud non-stop until their team is done. USA fans need to get rid of the "tennis" mentality that we need to be quiet when the other team is serving.
BTW, the USA men had lost to Argentina during pool play in '84 and ended up winning the Gold against them. It can happen.

BTW, the USA men had lost to Argentina during pool play in '84 and ended up winning the Gold against them. It can happen. BTW, it was Brazil not Argentina in 1984 that the USA lost to in pool play. Many speculated that Doug Beal threw the match on purpose to give Brazil a false sense of their ability to play at the same level as the USA. By the end of the match, none of the USA starters were left on the court, except for Dvorak. Guess the 20+ stopped a little short of 24.

Errors are killing USA. Italy with set point First of all....great job ladies in winning in five games. As expected lots of posts in this thread and I know I'll be repeating what has been mentioned already, so anyway in this quarterfinal match I gotta say I was finally impressed on how Team USA played especially in game five. I(as well as my coworkers) had to agree with Kevin Barnett and Paul Sunderland that the double substitution(which Team USA did four years ago in Athens) was good and bad, bad that it stalls momentum and that if Berg and Willoughby is playing well - don't take them outta the game, it seemed like a gamble, but hey Ping and Woodstra knows what they're doin and in the end it worked. Oh what else....let's see - we know Robyn kept setting to the outside too many times even though the passing was good(it was good not great) and she didn't seem to be on her game, the outside hitters were good and when the middles were set they were very effective. Wasn't she setting a faster offense 8 years ago when she was a rookie sarter? I have more thoughts about this match...quite proud of them how they ended up winning the match and moving on despite playing up and down in games one to three. We all look forward to them playing much, much better against Cuba. Cuba - defeated us in '92 and '96. Let's hope it won't be like that again this time. Good luck ladies!!! -oh yeah...many in here get a bit uptight when we criticize the men's or women's team and can't believe that when our teams play well we gush with favorable praises or if they lose we're frothing at the mouth ready to drag them to the guillotine...to me that's typcial fan behavior...they call it bipolar now. It's life sweetie pies...man/woman up to it, let they say what they have to say and let's play(or watch) volleyball

Berg's the most underrated player in the USA -- in terms of USA fans. Too bad she's not taller or thinner. She might have a future in volleyball. I remember four years ago we mentioned about Berg's physique. That set off a string of nasty exchanges of defending her body shape and among the people in here. Seems to me her furture in volleyball is doing quite well. Okay more than quite well. She is one of the best setters in the U.S., so obviously she and the coaches thinks she definitely has a lot to contribute to U.S. volleyball. Way to come off the bench Ms. Berg and help the team win. Look forward to all of ya winning in the semis.

I only watched the last 2 sets, but Berg serving and the blocks and attacks from the middle were the difference makers in this one. What a great win for team USA. At worked today(we're watching the Olymics and getting paid...how terrific is that?!!) coworkers(and they're not even hardcore volleyball fans) and I TV commentators Barnett and Sunderland noticed that right off the bat. All Team USA had to do and they did was try and slow down Team Italy's outside hitters and Team USA mix their sets which Berg did. What I like about Team USA's opponents was that they could bump set the ball so well - sure it was obvious where they were gonna bump set the ball to and make it easier for Team USA to set up the block and defense, but Team Italy's OH's managed to get kills from those bump sets....rather impressive.

I DVR'd this match and just finished watching it. Yay!!!!!!! I hold my breath every time Kim Glass goes back to serve. How many errors does she have? I don't like Logan Tom's attitude at times, but she was great in this match. And Berg, give her the game ball, and the starting nod against Cuba.

Time to be fair and congratulate team USA for playing above their heads and winning against a stronger team. I'm not too sure that USA played that good or if the Italians really played that bad. They looked so off and the italians mentally checked out in games 4-5. You can argue that this was because of team USA (they did have great energy- and finally Tom had some focus), but I'm wondering why the italian level dropped off that much. I'm not going to be a fair weather fan here...I think USA loses to Cuba, loses the bronze medal match and then we are back to square one. The way I look at it this is a great view- I will be pleasantly suprised if they win (they have been winning since I brought up how disgusted I was with them) or they will lose and my points become valid again! Teams that can step up and play well when it counts can win- Colorado beat Nebraska not to long ago!! But that doesn't change the fundamental problems of bad passing and unathletic setters, and poor training.
