How many of us have been to the Olympic games?
I ask because, as annoyed as I was about the spoilers, I have to admit, the NBC olympic coverage has brought us together and presented more of an Olympic spirit than any Olympics I have attended, (1992 in Barcelona and 1996 in Atlanta).
The actual games can only accomodate so many people, but the television and Web coverage can potentially reach all humans. Considering the scope of that audience, I think we have to cut NBC a little bit of slack.
Has anyone not heard about how fantastic the volleyball at the Olympics was at their office or other events? I continually am asked questions about the game, about the players, and the teams each day at the office... something that rarely happened prior to the Olympic coverage.
I have been following it up with invitations to some local collegiate matches later this year and have had a fair amount of interest.
It's fine to complain and all, but let's not forget, that overall, volleyball has had a positive experience from these olympic games and from NBC's coverage of it.

In our case north of the border, CBC did a bang-up job of at least providing internet streaming if the TV broadcast wasn't available.
I did miss the P-B-P once in a while, but watching without any announcer, with just sounds around the court, players and coaches and all that was rather refreshing.

CBC is a public broadcaster, and I suppose they're less in fear about upsetting their advertisers than the very commerical NBC. American broadcasters have almost always held premier Olympic events for primetime even if many people discovered the outcome well in advance. ABC used to call this "plausibly live". I was rather surprised that they had to gold medal men's basketball game on live. I think it was 1:30AM on the East Coast, and it was also the first time I recalled NBC showed anything on the West Coast without a 3 hour delay.

I am so upset how NBC is slaughtering this gold-medal final. I know they didn't expect USA to be in it, but seriously? Do I need to see the replay of moments during the opening ceremonies. It's so disappointing when they did a great job showing all of the other rounds. And then this is what the game gets. These guys worked too hard and it's such a great story for NBC to be disrespecting them this way.

This should be on NBC Replay so watch the whole match from there. That's at least the saving grace.

This is true. But if they are going to butcher it, at least they had the intelligence to show the entire 4th game.
It's very difficult to be a VB fan.

I was only able to catch the final three points. How badly did the butcher the telecast? Must have been pretty cut up (probably like an ESPN telecast) since it was over in just over an hour.

Skipped game 1, left out most of games 2 and 3 (showed the ends of each, however). Showed all of game 4. About 30 minutes of air time, when you account for commercials.

It followed suit with how most volleyball matches are shown on TV: skip the first game, chop up the rest, then show the entire final game. I'd actually managed to keep myself in relative "media isolation" for the entire day, so as not to not ruin the outcome of this match (or the women's gold medal match, which was also shown tape delayed and chopped up). Still, I must agree with many posters that these two matches should've been shown LIVE! I do hope the full-length matches are on NBC's website, but would still rather have a DVD with all the Olympic matches (men's only, the women were too painful to watch most of the time) on it.

Well... at least you're not a marathon fan. Heck, even the Olympic races more than 800m get cut to commercial. Did they show _any_ of the men's basketball games in entirety? If volleyball only took 9.69 seconds to run, then maybe we'd see more complete matches, but look at the time of matches of events we're in competition with.

Yeah, volleyball is one of just two or three sports where the length of the game is determined by the score, not vice versa like almost every other event. NBC made a few careless moves that often spoiled the results of delayed matches, even when they started the match from the first set. For example, one team is up 2 sets to 1 over the other team and is leading 18-17 in the 4th set. Suddenly a little crawl/banner pops up on the bottom of the screen saying, "Women's 10meter Air Rifle Coming up in 9 Minutes".
