<snip> Apparently Hugh McCutcheon had to leave the bench after the win as he was overcome with emotion but he was back for the medal ceremony. Bittersweet win. I can only imagine his overwhelming emotion. For the last two weeks, he's been allowed to "compartmentalize" (his words) his grief -- putting it off for the sake of his responsibility to the team and their 4-year quest. At the final moment, when they finally won, I can imagine with the removal of his responsibility came the grief and the ecstacy all mixed together.

Re the change from 30 to 25 points, I believe that is only the women.

Unbelievable...Unbelievable
No one in the volleyball community will ever forget what happened to this team and what they were able to achieve.
This is the greatest performance by a volleyball team under the the most extreme circumstances I can ever remember, and hopefully ever will have to remember.
I can't think of a single person within this experience; the players, Hugh, the staff, the Bachman's, who haven't acted in an extraordinary manner these past two weeks. Every single person rose to the demands of incredibly horrific and challenging circumstance.
We are all so lucky and proud to have this team represent our country.
Unbelievable

rooney, lee, hansen, and touzinsky should all be back for 2012 along with anderson and who knows who else that the coaching staff deems ready. Hildebrand should be in the mix as well as winder.
i remember watching the 04 ncaa final and the announcers talking about touzinsky and how he was so high on the usa staffs list of candidates for national team... really didnt think he would make it after the injury but im glad he was able to make a come back and win a medal.
congrats to all of the US players both men and women and indoor and beach! definitely showed the world that the US is back on top of the volleyball world

I live in Massachusetts and no one can quite understand the joy I have for this team. Considering the USA doesn't produce many volleyball players and there are so few scholarships and opportunity, I am even more impressed. What a great group of guys!

I'm glad they all did great. Now can we stop the nonsense about how the US can't compete because the NCAA plays by different rules from the FIVB? Actually, from the men's perspective, the NCAA rules are not that different from FIVB especially with the change from 30 to 25 points. Does that include the number of subs?

Does that include the number of subs? Yes, NCAA men use only 6 subs...

Well it's not like the US women's team crashed and burned.
IMO, the volleyball rules are not a big deal compared to the whole "amatuer" issue. The NCAA is in the way of our young athletes going out and playing in professional leagues. Our kids have to choose between waiting for several years or missing out on the subsidized college education.

I avoided the result all day long. It was hard to do, but I'm glad I did. This was a tremendous win for this team. As far as I'm concerned, this is the story of the Olympics. With the way it started for this team, to have it end this way, well it's just an amazing feat and really you couldn't write a better ending.. The tragedy was unspeakable, but I think it brought this team even closer and I have a feeling that Todd Bachman was helping this team from above. I am so freakin happy for this group, they absolutely deserve it.
NBC didn't show the 1st set, chopped up the 2nd and 3rd sets, but showed the complete 4th set. Still, it was a boost for volleyball to be shown in primetime and the way the US teams performed at these games, unprecedented success for any country can only help the sport grow in this country. Well done to all the US volleyball teams, 3 golds and 1 silver. In my wildest dreams, I couldn't have imagined such success. This is just awesome.

So, was Lambourne on/over the line on that set?
the announcers had no idea what Brazil was arguing about. they thought it was Giba's hit being touched. Too bad they missed a big replay.

That's what I thought they were saying, too. I didn't notice he was over -- or even close.

No. The US broadcast didn't show the replay but CBC did in the live broadcast and the libero was clearly behind the 3 metre line when he set the ball. Landed in front of the line, but it was a legal set.

Being the coach of a high school team I had my guys watch this match. I am so glad I did. Thery're getting a taste of what I did in 84 and 88 with Kiraly and his dad waving the flag.....awesome.
