The best are Marv Dunphy, John Speraw, Don Shaw, Tom Peterson, Mark Pavlik and Charles Sullivan (Springfield I think).

Oh I forgot to mention Mike Wilton of Hawaii but he can be abrasive. He won't promise you anything so unless you can prove yourself you will be sitting on the bench. but he's a great coach. Al Scates is good but these days, his assistants run the show. He won't micro-manage you.

Sorry, but Al Scates is very hands on in all aspects.

Marv Dunphey is a good choice and so is Charlie Sullivan but really look to John Speraw to be the best choice for a MVB player looking to play D-I. Speraw is smart, fair and a good teacher. Look at what he has done in his first few months at UCI. Once a program that was unable to produce consistent results is now a nationally ranked team. Speraw is approachable, intelligent and truly a player's coach (since he was a player on 3 national championship teams)and knows what it takes to win. UCI and Speraw are the best choice.

Although they are not producing this year, I think USC might reclaim its rep in the next few years with Turhan. Most players have good things to say about Turhan and his assitant staff of Donald, Nabil and Mark. Plus SC is an increasingly prestigous school, their SAT's eclipse UCLAs now.

TD will be much more able to be successful and to recruit if he gets a permanent title.

Pete Hanson at Ohio State is a great coach. He helps is players on and off the court and is a great guy. Also the Ball State coach is a good on Mike Walton. I would agree that Pavlik is also a good one.

What about the coach at IPFW???

Ok - IPFW - School average to below - $$ cheap Volleyball environment - very good, strong following. Volleyball team - pretty tight bunch of guys...live to the fullest Coach - Arnie is a players coach....he has calmed down over the years but isn't afraid to let you know how he feels. Has earned the repect that he commands in the VBall world.
Stanford- School the best Very hard to get into ..$$ outrageeous but all worth it volleyball environment ok....not a whole lot of interest...so many students are pulled in different directions. volleyball team - ok but volleyball has a tendancy to take a back seat. Don Shaw - has regained some of his enthusiasm and certainly understands the player mentality.
Hawaii - School is average to weak in some areas. Cost educationally not worth it but other factor come into play. volleyball environment - the best....a dream but very difficult to travel and play well volleyball team - cutthroat - watch your back - always a player waiting to replace you. I love it! Big Target on your back in practice and against other teams Wilton - has a firm grasp on the needs of his players and growing appreciation of the tradition that is building there. Not sure if if he goes the extra mile for his players like a Pavlik, Walton, or Hansen.
BYU - School is respected and known $$ Cheap!! volleyball environment - Top 3 - tremendous support for most of there athletic teams Volleyball Team - Strange mix of guys - Lots of unique things to adjust to. Genuine either by force or conformity. Not a party school. Tom Peterson - Different bird. intelligent - soft spoken , Man of few words....but... Chooses words wisely and expects you to figure it out yourself. Help if asked. A good listener and observer. Not the ideal players coach.
Ball State - Not that easy to get into - Cost normal education pretty good Volleybaal environment - top15 Volleyball team - business like - nothing too exciting - very midwestern. Joel Walton - Very sincere and maturing fast as a coach. Players like to play for him....but he hasn't carved his mystique yet. Players are in good hands with him.
Lewis - Crappy school Waste if education is your goal Volleyball environment - average----should be better. Wannabe's Volleyball team - Surrounded by world-class athletes. Dave - i guess ok but players are there to play.....not much going on here.
More later...got to go

Saruman - excellent post. I learned a lot. I realize you are being general but that's what I'm looking for. I'll figure out the details for myself when I go on my unofficials.
