I dont understand why hawaii is so much higher than Irvine. Hawaii lost to BYU, CSUN, Irvine, and Stanford. Irvine lost to CSUN, Hawaii, Stanford, and Pepp. They have both lost to the same teams pretty much yet hawaii is number 2 and irvine is 5th behind Byu (understandable) and Lewis (you've got to be kidding). It just doesnt make sense that they are ahead of Irvine especially when Irvine killed them the second night, I am not saying that Irvine should be higher necesarily but Hawaii should be lower. Or UCI should be up there with them.

My guess is that Hawaii has basically split on the road which, in the MPSF, isn't too bad. Their only bad loss would be at home to Northridge, who hasn't been doing too shabby lately. Don't know where Irvine's losses were, but that would be my guess. It also doesn't hurt they return most of their national championship teams. Supposedly it's a clean slate, but everyone still sees them as the defending national champion.

the two early season wins over lewis don't hurt either. lewis' ranking may be high--though they haven't lost since losing to hawaii (that's 12 straight wins including wins at ball state and at penn state)--but in the voters eyes, that's still two quality wins over the #4 team in the nation right now.

I believe people are highly underestimating Lewis. They lost twice to Hawaii at their place with Gustavo not playing. That's like taking Costas off Hawaii. Watch out for Lewis, they are good.
