IMHO .. When the setter position started to be taller...coaches (who were mostly setters) had to reinvent the wheel---so they came up with liberos. Coaches were mostly setters? So guys like Scates, Dunphy, Peterson, Walton, Hanson, Rose, Stone, Campbell, Beal etc. all got together as the "Setter Fraternity" and create the first Libero.......the prototype.....for the FIVB world's fair? Can you share more of this history lesson? Its so fascinating. issgooood - Bates being the most complete player on George Mason is really helping your arguement.....as as for digging and being a libero in the MSPF being the real deal....? This is the same league that has one Mighty UCLA right? The same team that couldn't sideout in 5 tries of a rollshot jumpserve against a poor blocking Northridge team right? HHHHHMMMMMM. So much power! You opened the door

while liberos playing right back defense have all the power coming at them, those are the balls that are difficult to dig. its true that alot of liberos learn there position from previous outside hitting ... I'm confused. Outside hitters don't play right back defense, they play either middle or left back. All the liberos I've seen play left back defense. The setters and right sides play right back defense.

youre right, my mistake, i meant to say left back, sorry OK, good, because I just didn't know what was going on. And saying the libero isn't important because they concentrate on passing and digging is idiotic. Someone else made the point about the setter just setting being the same comparison. That's why it's a SPORT. People are good at different things to make it more interesting. Hell, all a receiver does is catch passes that are thrown to him. (that's not directed at you, anon, that's a general statement).

This whole thread makes me laugh at the ignorance of most volleyball fans in this country.
saying that the libero is the player that USED to be good in juniors is ridiculous...
men's volleyball is dropping off the map because of stupid comments like that... some of you people are morons who obviously can't appreciate the game. My guess is that you're a salty former OH who never got to the court and wants to hate on all the "little guys" (as you call them) who are making the game more exciting my improving passing, digging balls, and being emotional leaders.

Anyone can pass Anyone can dig Anyone can be an emotional leader. If midgets do it it is more exciting? I don't get your point about if "little guys" do it is is better. Next you are going to tell us that liberos should serve the "little" puff balls that barely clear the net. Boy...that will sure be exciting!

Anyone can pass Anyone can dig Anyone can be an emotional leader. Don't know what country you watch volleyball in but I see plenty of examples of players (NCAA level) that cannot pass, dig or be an emotional leader. They can hit the snot out of the ball however! That's why they play middle and OH. Those that cannot hit the snot out of the ball as well as their teammates, sit on the bench and shag.

You nuts?
Tallest guy gets recruited....tallest guy gets developed. The 6 footer that can hit the snot out of the ball is CONVERTED to libero. (told to get good on the little things if he want to see any floor time)

(told to get good on the little things if he want to see any floor time) I'm still laughing at your theory on how the libero position was created. LOL. Just for %*$#z and giggles, of the current men's college coaches and former coaches that I am aware of, this is what they did when they played (oh...way back in the stone ages of volleyball....lol): Scates - MB Dunphy - MB Pavlik - S Preston - didn't play VB (I think he played football) Speraw - MB Pat Powers (formerly USC) - OPP Jeff Stork (formerly Pepp asst) - S Rick McLaughlin (formerly LMU/Pepp/UWwomen/now UCSB women) - S Anyone know if Shaw played indoor? I know he played beach (hence the nickname "Big Daddy"). Turhan Douglas I think was a setter as well (did I read that on his USC bio?). I think Jeff Campbell played middle at CSUN way back in the late 80's for John Price. Hmm...no former OH's as coaches. Guess the "brain" positions for coaching are MBs and setters then. LOL.
