Who are the Freshmen who are major contributors fight now in Men's Vball. It is a very difficult thing to do. I know that there was a poll going on before but I'm curious as to people evaluation.
UCLA - Matt McKinney Rutgers - Brian Honsberger Long Beach - Robert Tarr Pepperdine - Andy Hein PSU - Dan O'dell OSU - Andy Cole /Stuart Katz
Who else....god I'm having a brain fart!

Tyler Hildebrand the setter at Long Beach State is as good of an example of an "impact" freshman that you will probably find. Certainly for Long Beach, no other freshman on this year's team has made more of an impact!!! No brainer! Both he and Beau Peters are the two best freshmen setters in the country, bar none. Beau could be seeing some substantial playing time though had he not sprained his ankle badly several weeks ago!

Are you talking true freshman or are you including redshirt freshman too? Cause Stuart is a redshirt. Also dont forget Mark Greaves at OSU. ALso, is Duncan Budcander (sp?) starting at LB? Pedro from Hawaii I hear is quite the player. SB has a freshman setter, but I'm not sure who the clear cut starter is right now.
And Beachman, I'm not sure the LB has the best two freshman setters in the country, bar none. I'm sure Dan O'dell, Bart Kowalski, or Dane Jensen would all have something to say about that.

It's Duncan Budinger, off of La Costa Canyon's NC team last year (as mythical as it was.) He was seeing a lot of solid playing time earlier, and now platoons. Considering a lot of freshmen don't play at all, he's seeing good playing time. And you can bet that his contributions on the practice court are helping everyone.
Robert Tarr is the guy who's come on very strong in this his freshman year. He was redshirting until two weeks ago and has been playing at the top of every match since then. It's too bad he had to waste 40% of the season sitting on the redshirt's bench. Can just imagine how much better he'd be playing right now. And he doesn't seem to be intimidated by anyone. A nice trait for a freshman with no collegiate playing experience.
I would rank Beau Peters over the UCSB boys, personally. And if Bart beat out O'Dell for the JNT then that would mean I'd rank him higher than him too.
Tonight's game with LBS vs. UCLA in the Pyramid will be a big test for both teams. UCLA seems to be rebounding from having a lot of mid-season injuries. LBS has been shaking up its line up a lot, so we'll see who's got the best formula tonight. 7:30.

How about the best red shirt freshman in the country. Nic Vislay! He is a middle blocker for Irvine and should be voted freshman of the year.

How would you rate the Best Freshman of the Year in the past 10 years. I like Brandon Taliafero, UCLA and Chip McCaw, Pepperdine, Kimo Tuyay, Hawaii, Sean Rooney of Pepperdine.
McCaw is the only Freshman setter to lead his team to a National Championship. Taliafero took them to the National Championship game, but lost. Tuyay lost in the MPSF Final to UCLA, but finished 3rd in the National Rankings. Rooney replaced 2 Time All-American Scott Wong, and help the Waves to the National Championship Game in 2002.

I've got to agree w/ Shibbybeam...Nic Vislay of UC Irvine is playing great Volleyball. Saw him play against Long Beach St. He deserves alot of credit. He is very fast and has a knack for beating the block...probably reminds Speraw of himself a little. A 6'4 middle with approx. .450 kill % .....pretty good freshman!

RIGHT ON "Old School VB Fan"... Freshman of the Year's throughout history! Chip McCaw was such a good call, especially since he came out, and like you said, took Pepperdine all the way! Question for anyone... because I totally forget... was Costas FOY... the stand-outs from that class were Keenan, Costas and Toppel... does anyone remember who it was in 2000? I shouldn't even be admitting that I forgot this one!

I believe that for FOY, the candidates cannot be redshirt freshmen. Nic could certainly qualify for AA consideration though As for Long Beach - They have a lot of talented freshman on the team which will be a ton of fun to watch over the next three or four years! Go Tarr!! Go Hildebrand!! Go Budinger!! Go secret weapons!! GO BEACH!!!

Absolutely I meant True Freshmen the at are starting and having a major impact on their respective team.
Yes Katz is a redshirt I forgot. The comment on Bart beating out O'dell is yesterday news and questionable at that. Also I want evaulations of this Season's impact. So with that in mind give your thoughts please.
So we have : UCLA - Matt McKinney Rutgers - Brian Honsberger Long Beach - Robert Tarr Pepperdine - Andy Hein PSU - Dan O'dell OSU - Andy Cole LB - Tyler Hildebrand Hawaii - Pedro

Tyler Hildebrand has been a steady force at the setter position, averaging 14.47 assists per game. Hildebrand also set a personal-best 79 assists versus Pepperdine on Jan. 31.
Knipe inserted freshman Robert Tarr into the line-up for the first time this season versus UOP on 2/12. Tarr recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs in his LBSU debut. Tarr then recorded 21 kills and five digs versus Stanford the following night on 2/14. Tarr is already averaging 3.94 kills and 1.38 digs per game.
Duncan Budinger has filled up the middle, averaging 2.22 kills per game. He set a personal-best 15 kills in the 3-1 victory over Stanford on 2/14, and is second on the team with a .436 hitting pct.
I don't think McKinney is putting up those kinds of numbers yet, but there is still the second half to go.
Andy Cole and Mark Greaves are doing great considering their situation at OSU. They are having to carry a lot of the load in their freshman year and they are handling it well.
Some posters on the board have said that Pedro is streaky - I don't know. How much time as he really had at OH?
Andy Hein must be doing very well - look where Pepp is.

The comment on Bart beating out O'dell is yesterday news and questionable at that. When old news is the only news with which to judge it is current. 8 months ago isn't that long. Also, Matt McKinney is another player who wasted 40% of his season sitting on the UCLA Basketball team's bench before he was able to pry himself free from that fiasco and come on to the VB team. He has been very hot for the Bruins from his very first match.

Hey Waverider.
Costas was AVCA Freshman of the Year, and 1st Team All-American. I believe Toppel was Volleyball Magazine Freshman of the Year and same year. AVCA and Volleyball Magazine has in the past differed in their selections. In 2001 Barretto from Lewis was AVCA FOY, while Tuyay from Hawaii was Volleyball Magazines FOY. Like Toppel, Costas and Tuyay the FOY should be True Freshmans (not red shirt freshman - cause they are actually sophs).
