UH volleyball player Azenha quits team Advertiser Staff Freshman outside hitter Pedro Azenha has quit the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team, school officials announced. Azenha, a former member of Brazil's Junior National team, notified the coaches of his decision this morning. Azenha requested a release from the program, an unnecessary procedure since NCAA men's volleyball does not require a transferring player to redshirt. The request was granted, according to UH assistant coach Aaron Wilton, although Azenha is expected to remain in school for the rest of the spring semester. Azenha played in 22 games, starting two matches, and averaged 3.41 kills per game. He recently lost his starting job at opposite hitter when the Warriors shuffled their starting lineup for the fourth time this season. Wilton said Azenha's decision was partially based on his playing time, although he mentioned several other undisclosed factors. the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2003/Feb/28/br/br11p.html

I feel real bad about Pedro leaving Hawaii. He would have been a "Star" for the next three years. I know that he was paying his own way this year. Based on what the exchange rate in Brazil, he was taking a hit financially. However, he was going to receive a sizeable scholarship with Costas, Eyal and Tony graduating this year. I know he wanted to come to Hawaii next year, but Hawaii wanted him on campus this year because of the strict guidelines on international players. He was a nice kid, but to quit on your team in the middle of the season, because, of playing time was not right also. I can see him playing for BYU or Lewis where all the Brazilians all end up. With Pedro gone, Hawaii loses its International Flavor and will have a starting line up made up of alot of California players next year. I'm pretty sure Hawaii will come up with another great player for next year. Especially with sizeable scholarship funds available. UH fans count of Wilton and Tino to bring in a quality international player. All the good California players are already committed to other schools. Good Luck to you Pedro. Bookumdanoaloha.

I said sizable, not full. Very few players receive a full scholarship. The top players usually gets 80%. All I know is that Pedro would have received a nice scholarship package for next year. Hopefully, Hawaii has a good recruiting class for next year. Right now I don't know of any possible candidates, except, for Ben Brockman from San Diego at Libero. Ben is probably the best libero in the junior ranks right now. He's another beach buddy of Kimo and Matt in San Diego. Ben is looking at Hawaii, UCI and UCSB. Bookumdanoaloha.

Here's an off the wall, yet plausible, thought regarding Pedro. So, he wants playing time? He would most likely get all the playing time he wanted plus lots of sets at Quincy University. Quincy is an up and coming MIVA school located in Quincy, Illinois. They are a young, close knit team coached by a former assistant on a national championship team. The team has already attracted some California talent and already signed the top players out of Chicago and St. Louis. It also currently has two Brazilian starters. The school administration is dedicated to committing whatever is necessary to make Quincy a top flite volleyball program. The school is small and the facilities are state of the art. Pedro could be the type of impact player needed to jump this team into the elite.

The setter that signed with Hawaii is Brian Beckwith and his best friend, Jake Schkud was also heavily recruited by Hawaii but signed with UCSB.
