I have watched exactly one episode of this show, last year. Its glorification of our incipient dismissal of the rule of Law in favor of mythically heroic vigilantism that embraces that most nihilistic creed - The Ends Justifies The Means - was so revolting that I haven't had the faintest interest in following it further. The self-appointed morality police are always harping on shows that portray outlandish sexuality, but with the level of amorality that the public is being prepared to accept by F.U.D. propaganda such as 24, they might as well call the show "Desperate WhiteHousewives". Well....ok....but I am capable of separating fact from fiction. It's entertainment. Not all of the show's premises are that outlandish. We do contract private military forces. All TV is an embellishment of real life. Based on what I've read of your posts, I believe that you are capable of intellectually separating fact from fiction. However, there is a mountain of clinical data that shows the human experiential/perceptive system (the analytical functions of the brain together with the emotive centers and the endocrine system) is not well-disposed to separate fact from fiction. Even for the very astute, emotionally-charged experiences can have a powerful influence over information processing. Our modern entertainment society depends on the belief that we can expose ourselves to 5-7 daily hours of fictional emotional displays, and still somehow maintain a connection to reality and a centered self-honesty. It is, in my opinion, the most dangerous assumption of our era.

I would agree for people who watch 5-7 hours of TV a day (which is quite a few given the number of obese Americans.) There are weeks where i don't watch that much. I am doing more important things! I don't think 1 hour of fantasy TV is going to hurt me....but I could be wrong. I think Bauer represents the renegade that many of us have wanted to be from time to time. Acting on emotion and belief rather than protocol. Who knows what actually happens in these types of situations in the real world. I highly doubt that the American people, in general, are privy to the actions of our undercover agents in the field.

gee ..
Watching 24..
THE ONLY REAL DEBATE ON HOW WE TREAT TERRORIST AND QUESTION THEM AND OUR SELVES vs. THE CONGRESS AND CURRENT ADMINISTRATION AND THEIR TAKE.
I would say that I HOPE 24 is the real deal.
Nowhere in the left wing Democratic stance that we should just release enemy combatants and terrorist do we FEEL ANY TRUE SECURITY.
WE KNOW for a fact those who are released from QITMO RETURN TO THE BATTLE FIELD..not everyone..but more than 1/3 rd have.
We know information gleaned from waterboarding worked to save lives.
WE know that terrorist have no rights under Geneva convention.
I know that when a bomb goes off and kills YOUR FAMILY or someone YOU LOVE, care about ..or maybe just another AMERICAN ...that you will want to know why it wasn't prevented.
Shaking hands with dictator killers who run their countries through TERROR is not the ANSWER.
OBAMA and DEMOCRATS have NOT MADE AMERICA SAFER.
go graze on some grass...the herd mentality is strong among you.

If in fact our "only real debate" on an issue of this importance comes in the form of an enormously expensive fictional production designed for the purpose of selling its audience's eyeballs to automobile and beer advertising departments, then things are far worse than even a pessimist like me could imagine.

Is it any worse than NFL football? Beer commercials during the "family friendly" superbowl?
Or cartoons pedaling nutritionally empty breakfast cereal making our kids fatter and pre-diabetic at the age of 12?
