Stephen Tsai's Blog: The five semifinalists for the UH volleyball coaching job will be interviewed Thursday via teleconference. Among the finalists, we're told, are Tino Reyes, Charlie Wade, Mark Presho and Scott Wong. Next week, two or three finalists will be brought in for face-to-face interviews.

The Warrior volleyball team finalized a commitment from the starting opposite attacker on Germany's Junior National team. Jonas Umlauft has been admitted into UH, and will enroll in July. Pacific coach Joe Wortmann had predicted that Umlauft will be one of the top playes in the NCAA next season. According to another coach, Umlauft is between former Warriors Yuval Katz and Costas Theocharidis in skill level.

5 finalists ... but only 4 names mentioned.
who's the 5th name?
if it were Sealy, you'd think he'd be an obvious name to mention. Reed Sunahara maybe?

if he is as promised at opposite, then he'll be a nice compliment to Steven Hunt on the outside. (just need some consistency from the other OHs.) wonder who on the staff was most intrumental in recruiting him? ... Reyes, maybe. if it turns out Reyes isn't there next year -- whether it be as head coach or associate/assistant capacity -- hope they guy still comes here.

Jonas is coming regardless who the coach is. Seems like he really wants to play/study in the US.

I believe the ideal situation would be to hire Wade and then keep Reyes as his # 1. I'm sure Wade and Reyes are friendly and familiar with each other as they must have bumped into each other at vball camps, clinics and practices hundreds of time. I feel Reyes is a fine coach and deserve to stay. He may have to adjust to a different philosphy with a new coach but volleyball is volleyball. the fundamentals are same wherever you go.
Another thing to consider is what will happen to our short OHs if the new coach junk the quick offense. Hawaii would have to retool their roster or keep the quick offense until all the "smurfs" graduate.

If Donovan REALLY, REALLY wanted someone who could bring back the fans and can effectively communicate and interact with the community, WADE is your guy. Just based on his ties with the women's team, I'd say he'll bring in another 500-800 fans --- just by his name alone...AND if he can win...
Based solely on the article the HonAd ran yesterday on what Donovan wanted. I'd say it's Wade's to lose.

With this new recruit and Hunt, I think the future is bright. Getting back to recruiting these international all-stars. These two will bring Hawaii back with the proper coaching and support. I say move Tuaniga to libero after Cervantes graduates and I agree, retool the team. We have raw athletic ability, but not enough talent as of right now. ANYONE know who else is coming to Hawaii?

Among the finalists, we're told, are Tino Reyes, Charlie Wade, Mark Presho and Scott Wong. if this is the case, then uh is going about it the right way - good coaches, all with strong hawaii ties. if any of the four coaches above wins at uh, they'll be able to recapture the uh men's vb family.

Interesting to hear the quote from Pacific coach. Rumor was this kid was headed there last year, but obviously didn't. They sure could have used help at the pins - any pins. Looks like Pacific's loss is UH's gain. Understand Pacific has a decent setter coming in - should help after a dismal year, as well as a redshirt freshman who is for real - but they will need more than that to get out of the cellar. Any more Dauburs-like transfers? That kid had some fire a few years back - and then we can go back to Tamas too. Those were the days of mpsf parity - minus ucsd - which has now risen from the ashes
By the way, who is going to set at UH? They have some young guns, and may be able to pull some upsets, but 8th place may be a stretch at this time for a prediction.

How is Hunt at passing?
Will Hunt and Walker be the OHs? If that 6'9 kid is legit, that trio could become really good. Zemjlack setter?

Walker would have to make some ginormous leaps in the passing department to hold up his end of the deal in UH's receive. The new recruit is taking over the premier hitting role, which Walker had been in the past 2 seasons. With Wilton gone, hopefully the lineup shuffling and people playing out of position all the time will be gone as well.
Walker's a good kid, and an amazing athlete. However given his size he needs to work on refining his skills in order to stay in the starting lineup. All things being equal, or close to equal, I'd take a 6'9" player over a 6'2" player anyday, regardless of the athleticism of the 6'2" guy and especially if the 6'2" guy doesn't display amazing ball control skills.

Well I'm still holding to my top three: Presho, Reyes and Allen. Allen looks to be out. Reyes recruiting the German National and maybe Metzger at setter are brownie points for Tino. I heard the Metzger had a temper, I don't have problems with that. Costas, Tony and Dejan were head cases. I guess Presho is back in the mix.
I really have a problem with a Wade. A womens coach. Has he ever coached a Mens/Boys program.

6'9 opposite coming to UH makes me quite happy.
Maybe now we can look for a 6'9 setter =)...

Metzger's temper is ridiculous.
