Are the guys on the teams UCLA are playing pros or club guys? That's an INTERESTING question! I cannot imagine UCLA playing any pro team...for obvious reasons. They had better be sure that none of the teams they play have any pro contracts...or their season is toast.

I'm sure big Al has all his t's crossed and i's dotted, but it would be interesting to know what the deal is. I think this tour involves professional teams but there must be some twist to get around it. Anyone know how it works?

It must be OK to play against a Pro team in an exhibition match, but not to be a member of a professional team. UCLA has done this once every four years, so I'm sure it is all legit.

It would probably be fair to say that there are players in the B1 league who are getting paid by NCAA standards. I don't know for sure, but it's likely that the NCAA has Serie B classified as 'semi-pro' which, I believe, has been the saving grace in some cases on the women's side.
This is just a guess, but I would think Serie B pay scale might be similar to A or AA baseball in the USA. However, there are most likely players on every team who make nothing at all (like a walk-on in the USA).

Actually, if you read the rules at NCAA.org, UCLA is ok in going to Italy and playing even if some have pro experiance. Seeing that they beat one of my EIVA teams in the semis, I was going over the rules carefully to nail them.....
Oh well...

NCAA.org rule: 12.2.3.1 And for my 2cents....I think it is great the UCLA does this. More coaches should do this for the programs and for the players. (If UCLA can find the money....anybody can. The whole UC system is strapped for $$$)

Thanks for the clarification...how does anyone keep track of all these rules? That rule is easy to keep track of because of summertime volleyball. Imagine some idiot takes your picture playing when you are playing against some pro in some stupid weekend-warrior tournament. Poof...unless you play for BYU (with their compliance department) you are gone! If they ever change it....it would cause havoc with "pre-qualifying" each round. With that rule we don't have to worry...just don't take money or money substitutes.

Sorry for the delay in replying to this recent set of thoughts... Some comments:
1. There is no difference between "Pro" and "Club" outside of America. All "Pro Teams" are also "Club Teams" as all sports outside of the USA is club-based. An example: If we had the same system as Europe, and you had an 8 year-old son in LA, he might play for the same club as Kobe Bryant - the LA Lakers. He would have the same president, jersey, and training facilities. When he got older and better, he might be on the Lakers C team, then move up to B and when he got really good, he might even train with the A team on occasion.
2. The Slovenian Teams on this tour were both in the Top Division in Slovenia. This is the only Division that pays players in Slovenia, and there are several "full pros" (don't have other jobs) on each of those teams as well as several "semi-pros" (have other jobs or go to school).
3. It is totally OK for NCAA Teams to play AGAINST Pro Teams and Pro Players on their Once-In-4-Years-Tour.
4. Most of the B1 teams that UCLA is playing have 2-3 starters earning 1000-1500 Euros/month and several that are playing for pennies. The TOP B1 teams can pay more as they are basically "buying" a spot in A2 where most everyone is a full "Pro".
I hope this helps clear up some of your questions and concerns... if you have anymore, feel free to email me as well as I'm having trouble getting on-line (other than checking email) while on tour.
