Will a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT work with just its standard lens? Yes, it will "work". The thing is, most likely with a standard packaged lens you will not have any zoom functionality. You could buy the Rebel XT without one of those standard lenses and just pick find a decent zoom lens to give you a bit of flexibility if you're not up close to the action. The standard kit lens is an 18-55mm zoom lens. It's just not what you'd call telephoto. I believe the Digital Rebel XT has a smaller sensor than 35mm film, so that gives maybe an additional 133% telephoto. So it's maybe equivalent to a 24-68mm telephoto 35m film lens. It's not a terribly wide aperature lens, but the advantage of a DSLR (especially with Canon's CMOS sensors) is that they gather more light per pixel than the tiny sensors in consumer digital cameras. You can order it without that kit lens and get an entry level telephoto lens for My lens is maybe equivalent to 38-380mm telephoto 35mm film lens. To get that kind of telephoto in a DSLR gets rather pricey, although the results can be extraordinary. There is the newer Canon S2 IS with a 12x lens, although that uses different memory cards than the S1 IS. The real question is whether one wants to approach digital photography as a hobby or as a real expensive hobby. ;D

I like my camera a lot for what it does in capturing volleyball photography, but it's not perfect. It's a $500 camera. Olympus C-5060 with 5.1 megapixels and some nice options. Best thing I like about it is the lens and colors it captures! It's not perfect like the SLR's could be by any means, but does have capabilities for adding lenses. Here are some examples of recent shots I've taken. ibvb.blogspot.com/AVP in HONOLULU (today) I'll have to take some more from the Stan Sheriff shortly, the ones I have are not good example because the camera draws focus from foreground objects and doesn't capture action like it can.... i'll get some soon.

I found out that my EarthLink web hosting service is capped at 1GB of download bandwidth per site and per calendar month. The downloads of the pics I took of UCLA/USC at Cal had maxed my download limit within 4 days. I think I need to get a pBase account or something. $23 is about half the cost of filling up the tank in my compact car. I'm also getting a serious urge to go out and buy a Canon EOS 20D.

I saw a box for a 8 megapixel canon eos rebel at dell new for $700...
Lens kits are about $500 for a solid lens.
That's the way to go, in my opinion. I like my camera a lot... but it has a few limitations that the SLR's don't have.
