What has he done lately ,look at the record!!!! Yeah you're right. All Speraw did was lead UCI to the upper echelon of the conference after being bottom feeders for the last decade. What was I thinking. Or were you talking about Scates, who has won only about as many titles as every other volleyball coach put together? Unless you are Mike Wilton I don't think you can criticize what Scates has done lately.

A little early I would think to be talking about who is gonna be Coach of the Year. However, of the ones listed at the beginning of this thread, how many had a team ranked "LOWER' in the pre-season than Alan Knipe and Long Beach State? No one predicted that they would be even this good!

However, of the ones listed at the beginning of this thread, how many had a team ranked "LOWER' in the pre-season than Alan Knipe and Long Beach State? No one predicted that they would be even this good! Really, when I looked at who would threated for the title, Long Beach was in my top 4, with Hawaii, UCLA, and Pepperdine as my top 3. My vote would go to UCI. Marv did a great job getting new players to fill in for those he lost but also returned his star players. UCI has a first year head coach. Usually, UCI is just barely making it into the MPSF tournament. This year, they look like they will be a tough team to compete with.

UCI is currently 8-6 in the MPSF and with two losses, that is my prediction at BYU they will be 8-8 and with 6 matches to go they will be right in the middle of the pack with everyone else, so let's not get to ahead of ourselves with this prediction. Second, Dunphy has by far the best talent in the league from top to bottom with his starting 6 players, so everyone needs to further describe what it means to be coach of the year. The best coach for what team they had? The coach that gets the most out of his team? What is the determination?

I think a coach that is getting a lot of his team is Jeff Campbell. He hasn't had the best luck recruiting - a lot of people outside of CA have never heard of CSUN. He only had 3 or 3.5 scholarships until this year. I think he has done a great job.

Charlie Brandt- Took chances on marginal players unwanted by other major college programs, developed them to where they could compete. Oh wait... Seriously, Speraw's done a great job and everyone who has played for him or knows him totally loves him. I just wanted to give Charlie some props. The UCI turnaround didn't just happen this year. The true test will be two or three years from now when Speraw has a chance to recruit his own players. The next recruiting class is more of the same type of players UCI has had in the past. Speraw was hired late in the process and most of the blue chippers were gone. Its the next class that will be interesting.

Although I voted for Marv Dunphy in this poll, I want to point out what a great guy John Speraw is. He may not remember, but he (along with others) helped me out with identifying boys volleyball talent (esp in the Southern California area) for us to cover boys volleyball better. I regret that my site isn't up anymore to do a full-length feature interview with Speraw.

I regret that my site isn't up anymore to do a full-length feature interview with Speraw. Why don't you freelance one for Volleyball Magazine. They can really use some help, IMO. (Also, feel free to write articles and post them up here. If you've got the desire, there's always a forum.)
