Juan Figueroa had 13 kills and 4 blocks and teammate Chris Jones added 10 kills in a rare start to help the No. 14-ranked USC men's volleyball team sweep No. 8 Penn State, 30-26, 30-22, 30-27, in a non-conference match on Wednesday (March 8) in USC's North Gym.
The Trojans, who had dropped 7 of their last 8 matches after starting the 2006 season at 7-4, improved to 9-11. Penn State, which has now dropped its past 2 matches after winning 10 in a row, fell to 11-6.
It was only the second time the Nittany Lions have played at USC (the other time was in 1987, also a 3-0 Trojan win).
Jones hit .353 overall and had 3 blocks. A sophomore making only his third career start, he was in the lineup for regular starting middle blocker Andrew Vernon, who was resting sore knees (he had surgery on both kneecap tendons in the fall of 2005).
Joao Grangeiro had 4 aces for the Trojans, while Matt Mosko added 9 kills while hitting .571, plus 4 blocks and 3 aces.
For Penn State, Matt Proper had 12 kills and 2 aces, Nate Meerstein added 10 kills (hitting .692) and 4 blocks and Matt Anderson had 9 digs.
USC had a better hitting percentage than Penn State (.323 to .240) and had more blocks (11.0 to 9.0) and aces (8 to2).
The first two games of the match were deadlocked at 11-11 before USC steadily pulled away in each. In the opening game, the Trojans took advantage of 3 aces. Then in the second game, Troy hit .355 to Penn State's .207 while also getting 4 blocks and 4 more aces. The Nittany Lions fought back from a 17-12 deficit in the final game and actually took a 23-22 lead before USC regained control by scoring the last 3 points of the match.
USC next hosts UC San Diego in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (March 10) at 7 p.m. in the Lyon Center.
