I can not believe some of the posts that I have read for today. UCI has won 13 game in a row including the last two over BYU. They have the best record in MPSF and the nation. And I am reading posts that say there only 4 teams that stand a chance to qualify for the final four from the MPSF (BYU, Hawaii, Pep, and Beach). Others are saying that UCI will drop their next game to USC. People who are trying to discredit UCI this year need to swallow their pride, and tell the truth that UCI is a great team this year and right now they are the clear cut favorites to win it all. There is a reason that this week they will be the unanimous number 1 team in the nation.

Dream on Shibby !! -- my Trojans -- fight on -- will prevail Are basing your statements on the two big wins against San Diego and Penn State. Wait didn't the Trojans lose to Pacific a couple of weeks ago. Go Longhorns

I am not saying that UCI is a guarenteed winner. Like almost every year in the MPSF, anyone can beat anyone with maybe the exception of UCSD. It was more the timing of your post that aggrevated me, since they just pulled out two big wins against a very good team. One thing I can guarentee you is that UCI is going to show up when they play the trojans.

I agree with Shibby, there may not be any superstar standouts on the Irvine team, like a Hein, Cala, Hildebrand, Baptista, Winder or Dante, but UCI deserves some respect, afterall this is a team sport, and apparently they've proved it these past couple of months going 13 straight wins and a number 1 ranking... that says something for "team" volleyball, doesn't it?

I'm impressed there really are TEAMS out there and not just great players. I still think national ranking "team" stats leaders should be posted, not so much on individual players.

What's not to like about UCI. They're America's team after all. Speraw's idea of a foreign player is someone from Colorado or Hawaii. They're the little train that could. Their starting line-up is smaller than all the other top teams. What other MPSF team starts a 6' OH? Spittle is the heart and soul of this team and a lot of fun to watch. Even if they should lose to the giants of Pepp. in 3 this weekend, you can't rule them out when the throats get tight and the arms get short. Pepp. just as young and talented as UCI and a lot bigger. Two very different styles. Just as they took care of Loyola and Penn State before BYU, they will not overlook USC. It was just last year that they lost to them, and they know USC is improved.

UCI definately looks good this year, I wouldn't say they are america's team or that they're a clear cut favorite but they are on a roll right now. With losses to UCSB,Pepp,Hawaii, and a 5-gamer with Cal Baptist , they are clearly vulnerable. I think UCI as well as Stanford showed how vulnerable BYU can be. Pepperdine at Irvine this weekend will tell us alot. Long beach may or may not get things straightened out and the 2-match with Hawaii and BYU will elevate one of those teams.

Irvine didn't lose to Cal Baptist in that 5-gamer... and note, that was the very first game they played in the season. They were definitely rusty, from being off for several weeks for Winter Break... I would be tempted to throw that game out as any indication of what the UCI team is all about. They've turned a lot of heads and opened up a lot of eyes, UCI is not a team to take lightly.

Sure they are America's team! Every time a TV game is broadcast (not enough) Speraw is the TV color guy. America has imprinted on him, and by default--his team.
It is all about exposure and perception.

How could anyone NOT give this team respect....they are doing it with no real superstars to speak of.....a great, no an awesome TEAM performance, which is what this sport is supposed to be all about.....they are showing everyone else how it's done! VERY IMPRESSIVE!

UCI is doing it with defense and not making mistakes . If you have a service error you don't even get a chance at a point . They seem to be serving consistant and their serve receive and passing is very solid . Isn't their libero a freshman ?

I think UCI as well as Stanford showed how vulnerable BYU can be. I think comparing UCI's wins with the Stanford losses to BYU is ridiculous!! How do they have any relation whatsoever? BYU played multiple subs and swept Stanford both nights! UCI played solid error free matches and took advantage of BYU making mistakes! i.e. Sat night when the service error differential was like 25-6 for UCI. Thats how you beat the top teams in this league. UCI is playing great vb right now, they are THE team to beat.

What other MPSF team starts a 6' OH? Spittle is the heart and soul of this team and a lot of fun to watch. Doesn't USC have both OH's that are 6 feet? So the answer would be USC.
