Important Shame on UCSB to allow Patak to become ineligible. Black eye to the program. How can the coaches, department and academic supervisors allow something like that? Wow. I'm sorry, but I think it's complete bunk to blame the coaches, department and academic supervisors for something like this. We're talking about a young man (21/22) who has been given a free ride to an excellent university in a prime location. Frankly, I don't understand the use of taxpayers dollars for athletic scholarships at all. In any event, let's put the responsiblity for maintaining eligibility where it belongs - on the student! This is not a red shirt freshman. This is the center piece of the program. Of course the student has responsibilities but I still think this is a black eye for the program.

It is possible that it isn't grades.
There is an NCAA rule that you have to have completed X% of your credits towards your major at certain points in your career. So, at the end of your soph year, you must be 25% done with your degree program, by the end of your junior year, 50% and so on. This rule is to keep athletes from taking nothing but fresh and soph level courses and never getting the credits they need for a specific degree. I believe that the percentage requirements increased within the past year or so, but I don't know what they are. This also means that they can't change majors once they start down a path unless they have the same required courses up to that point.
The student athlete advisers are supposed to help the students keep on track and making progress towards their degree.
If he is ineligible because of grades, then that is obviously his fault, but I wouldn't jump to any conclusions.
