Statistically I think that there is a decent argument of Kozlarek for top 5, golly gee even top 3, gawd dog it maybe even top tooth (second) most complete player in the nation. I guess that unjustly singles out just OHs and OPPs but obviously that would be the case when digs are gone from middles, and swings adios'd from setters, and just about all of the above ciao'd from liberos. Statistically I don't find fault within this logic, but strength of schedule obviously plays a part, but strictly stats alone one must agree.
But this brings up a decent argument. Who is the most complete player in the nation?

If you switched teams with Koz and Macias, you'de have Koz with the better stats only because he would be IPFW's top option. Loyola has a more balanced offense leading to less opportunities for Koz. No doubt that Macias is awesome in his own right and he'll probably win the POTW next year for sure. To illustrate, Macias has 1104 attempts over 98 games (11.27 per game). Koz has 785 attempts over 90 games (8.72). Just in conference alone Macias has 571 attempts over 46 games (12.41 per game) and Koz has 315 attempts over 36 games (8.75 per game). If Koz had more games and more attempts per game, he may well put up numbers as good if not better. Head to head, both players have the same total points in 2 matches with only a 0.5 differential in each match. Overall IPFW next two highes attempt leaders is between 400 and 500 over the year. Loyola's next 4 highest attempt leaders are between 400 and 500. And Loyola's James Grunst is 6-8.. and 2nd in the country in hitting percentage. CJ Macias is the prime target for other teams. He still puts up the numbers. I would argue that it is harder to put up those kind of numbers when other teams are keying on you. Not you and other players on a "more balanced offense." It is unknown what would happen if they switched spots.

I agree that Macias has more attacks.....but the bottom line is you, myself, 2,000 other fans in attendance, grandma and grandpa, and the guy that sells popcorn in the consession stand all know that the next ball and next ball and next ball are going to go to Macias.....ie very very rarely ever going up against a single block. I'm not stating the Kozlarek isn't a good player...he is a fine player. Add to the Loyola's James Grunst is 6-8.. and 2nd in the country in hitting percentage.....and Kloos not far behind and you hold that middle attacker on all solid passes.
Loyola did go 2-0 against IPFW.....so once again as I stated last year about this time......"Does this award go to the top player or (an individual on) the top team?" There are two differences there, isn't there?
I guess I am dissapointed once again, I thought voting on seniority only happened in women's volleyball. And since it takes place in the men's game as well then things like academics should have some weight. I also notice that Koz didn't make the MIVA all-academic team.
Congrats to Koz.
Let the tournament begin.
GO DONS!

I have seen them both play this year at least twice. There is no way that Koz would put up the numbers that CJ put up if they switched teams. Koz would not be able to hit .300 against a double block night in and night out. Taking that many swings, would Koz still be able to be really affective from the serving line? Cmon now. The voting by the coaches is so random, for a few years they vote on the best actual player in the conference, then the last two years they vote for the best player on the best team. I have heard refs say that he is the best and most exciting player to play in the MIVA in a long time. For CJ its probably a good thing that UF got cut, cause he would probably be stuck on 2nd team again this year, what am I thinking? UF would have finished 2nd in the conference this year.

"He carried his team to a second place finish"
are you kidding me? normally i just come on to listen to all the babble about BS this and BS that, but this comment made me create an account just to reply to this. IMO this is one of the dumbest comments ever, "well, i couldn't lead my team to a first place finish, but i did carry them to a second place finish." who cares about second. theres a quote, i don't know who said it, but it's something like, "taking second is not winning silver, it's losing gold".......second smecond, whooptie doooo....
now as for saying that they only pick the best player on the best team? what about in 04 and in 03? you're gonna tell me that IPFW was the best team in the confrence those year? and in 05, who could they have picked besides Greene?
carried his team to second.....HA

compared to his 04 year, when he did win it, he kinda had a fall off year, didn't he have a different setter in 05? that can make or break it right there.

CJ is a better player...and many people saw that when they were head to head. With all of the sets he gets, and still keeping that hitting percentage he deserves to be recognized. Congrats to Koz for winning, and a great senior year, but Cj will take his team to the Final Four and be player of the year the next 2 years, and I am almost willing to say National Player of the Year by his senior year. Lets go Dons!

Head to head how can you figure CJ was better than Kozlarek? Only had 5 more kills while recieving 17 more sets in the total of 7 games they faced eachother. Had lower hitting percetage, fewer assists, aces, digs, and blocks. Maybe you saw something in those games I didn't, and oh yea 2 L's in the loss column. Thats all in the past though and lets see a great MIVA tournament in Chicago! Good luck to all!!
