Did this possibility not occur to anyone when they decided on a cloth roof in Minnesota? You'd think that after the previous FOUR times it had collapsed, they'd have figured something else out. (Granted, this is a different material than was in place the other four times; and they thought this material would fix the problem - and it seemed to, as it hadn't collapsed since the new material was put on it 20+ years ago.)

I guess you can put the air-supported dome into the "nice try" category. Not a lot of similar designs have been built since they were popular in the early 80s.
As material cost and technology changes, and as energy costs change, so do engineering solutions.

Once the metrodome is gone, though, I will probably miss being "blown" out the door on the way out...

Once the metrodome is gone, though, I will probably miss being "blown" out the door on the way out... Santa Clara University used to have a gym with a similar air supported fiberglass roof called Toso Pavilion. I'd been there a few times, and they generally insisted that people use the revolving doors, which made for a smoother exit. I once exited via the supposedly alarmed emergency doors, and got shot out. The danger was that there were stairs about 8 ft from the exit, and there was a good chance that someone might get shot that far and tumble down the stairs. They eventually removed the roof and put a rigid roof on the building. The old roof was leaking, and I'm thinking the costs to power the fans were pretty high.
