Just looking ahead on this thread: When we get another 60 pages, are we going to have to worry about an invasion of Sooners' fans? OK, you lost me with that one- I'd think we'd be worried more about William the Conqueror. Well, the University of Oklahoma is in Norman...

Any thoughts on when the first weekend will be? Or report day? Obviously could all be in flux depending on COVID. Normally, the first weekend would be the last weekend in August (Aug 28-30). There was a discussion of this about 20 pages ago: volleytalk.proboards.com/post/2296106

L. Smith just doesn’t scream “right side” to me. Sure she can touch nearly 11 ft, and she has the height and arm length to boot, but she just seems more naturally a middle to me. Seems like Kipp will anchor the right side We need to see what L Smith can do with better coaching. I think she has enough quickness to play middle, but from what little video I've seen, she lacks commitment at the attack point. I believe Hambly and staff can fix this flaw. Better coaching? She has played for one of the top club teams in the country for years. Do your homework.

There is also the notion of maturity and understanding the information that is presented.

Coincidentally, I believe Kipp's best outing last year was against USC. She just had way too many freshman mistakes that Cardinal fans aren't really used to in their herald freshman recruits. I look for her to make a big jump this season. I mean, almost all of the big Stanford freshman recruits had real up-and-down first seasons. The two big problems for Kendall were that a. She was injured for part of the season and b. She didnt have consistent playing time due to the abundance of upper classmen. The last #1 recruit to step onto the court with a team even close in talent to this 2019 squad was Ogonna in 2001, and she went on to be a 2 time ncaa champion and Olympian. What about 2005? Not sure if Cynthia Barboza was the #1 recruit, but she started out the season playing like one. The best weekend I have ever seen a Stanford freshman have at Maples was her total demolition of UCLA and USC, in which she hit over .500 (I missed Kerri Walsh's freshman season)... and CB didn't even win Pac-12 POW that week! Cal's Angie Pressey won it because Cal went 2-0 against the same teams the same weekend. To paraphrase an old newspaper saying: Golden Bear bites Women and Bruins... that's news! Despite the mammoth loss of Ogonna to graduation, that team had real promise until the injury fairy ravaged it. By the end of the regular season, CB had torn her ACL (an indelible memory) and Kehoe could only play DS/L. Then, the tournament committee utterly screwed Stanford by (a) failing to seed the best Santa Clara Broncos team in school history and (b) placing them in a wounded Stanford's sub-regional (was that just money-saving or an extra turn of the screw because Stanford was hosting the following weekend?). It wasn't the first time the Card lost a sub-regional final... that was in 2000 at UCSB... but it was the first time they lost one at home. I was too disgusted with the fickle finger of fate to even go to that regional. P.S. My favorite indelible memory of CB is her dressing up as a shepherdess (Little Bo Peep?) for Halloween after a match as some sort of team dare... talk about being cast against type! Bryn Kehoe-set Stanford teams made it to three national championship finals, winning one. If she and CB were healthy in 2005, I think she'd co-hold the record with Lisa Sharpley (who was a setter/hitter for two years) and Jenna Gray of most Stanford Final Four teams set (with four). I remember Bryn's Mom disputing that Lisa Sharpley should count as the first freshman setter to set a team to a national championship because she was in a 6-2 in 1994 and 1995, not a 5-1. I think they both should count as first.

Who does anyone think we are looking at class of 2022? Is Middleton of Arizona one? Someone mentioned that she's not a Stanford type. Maybe academically it's not a fit.

What are the 2022 needed positions? The seniors in 2021 will be Fidelak and Campbell. If the rumors about Francis and Miner come true, then probably a pin hitter or two and a middle
