Per the terms of SCC order, it's only in effect until CA lifts its stay at home order:
While Santa Clara County is under the State's Regional Stay at Home Order, collegiate and professional athletic programs are allowed to operate only outdoors, and only if athletes do not come within six feet of one another at any time; for clarity, all athletic activities that involve contact or close proximity are prohibited during this time. Any collegiate or professional athletic team or program that travels outside the County to engage in athletic activity prohibited in the County is prohibited from engaging in further athletic activity within Santa Clara County during this time period. Any collegiate or professional athletic team or program that travels outside the County to engage in athletic activity allowed in the County must comply with the Mandatory Directive for Travel. This restriction is in effect until 12:01 a.m. on the day after the California Department of Public Health announces that the County is no longer subject to the Regional Stay at Home Order, unless the County Health Officer otherwise rescinds, modifies, or extends this restriction.
So, since CA lifted the Regional Stay at Home orders, this should no longer apply to sports in SCC (starting at 12:01 tomorrow morning). SCC could extend it anyway but if they do nothing, the teams should be able to practice indoors, should not have to keep athletes 6' apart at all times, and should be able to go elsewhere to practice and play. At least that's how it reads to me.

California officially lifted the stay at home order this morning... However, "Counties can opt to be more restrictive than the state and it's unknown at this point which counties will decide to fall in line with the state's guidelines and which ones will implement more restrictive rules." Why do I get the feeling Santa Clara County is not going to change anything this week? I'm hoping otherwise, but... They could, out of the goodness of their heart, waiver college and Pro sports, like Stanford volleyball and the San Jose Sharks. The NHL takes serious precautions and has the money to test. High school and club brings a lot more people into the mix and the adherence to strict protocols would be mixed so I could see restricting them awhile longer. The other thing about SCC is that the boundary definition is so arbitrary, as the northern half of the county has a much lower positivity rate. Stanford and El Camino hospitals are taking overflow patients from the southern part of the county, but that shouldn't affect (say) Stanford volleyball from practicing indoors unless one of the team members/staff is "cross-talking" with the hospital.

I guess we wait and see about clarification. One thing that is good is San Jose has the Sharks, and they will put political pressure on SCC, backed by the data of course, to return home and play games at the Shark Tank.

San Jose Mercury News: "The Santa Clara County Department of Health on Monday announced that professional and collegiate sports, given that they closely follow mandatory directives, may resume in the county, potentially giving the Sharks an opportunity to return to San Jose in the near future."

This is what appears on the SCC website updated today, Jan 25, regarding collegiate and pro athletes and events in SCC: 1. All athletes, coaches, staff, trainers, volunteers, and other persons interacting with athletes (collectively, “Athletes and Personnel”) must receive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing on at least three non-consecutive days per week. 2. All Athletes and Personnel for any collegiate athletic program or professional athletics organization based in the County must receive PCR testing within 48 hours prior to any home or away competition if they will be at the facility where the competition takes place on the day of the competition. Both specimen collection and results reporting must occur within this time period. 3. Any team visiting Santa Clara County for a competition must test and provide results for all Athletes and Personnel who will be traveling to the county within 48 hours prior to the competition. Both specimen collection and results reporting must occur within this time period. Visiting teams must use PCR testing to comply with this provision. Note: I did not include everything listed at the SCC website, only what I thought was important to the discussion of whether Stanford could practice indoors and host matches.

Thanks, hammer . This is great news for Stanford fans, as well as fans of other colleges and the Sharks. Looks like they'll be able to practice and play with the restrictions similar programs have, e.g., testing, coaches must wear masks, athletes wear masks when not actually playing, no live audience (as long as SCC is in the purple tier), etc.

Thanks, hammer . This is great news for Stanford fans, as well as fans of other colleges and the Sharks. Your welcome, and I think this should allow the Sharks to return home and play because the NHL is doing lots of testing anyway. I'm not 100% sure about Stanford Volleyball, because they need cooperation from their Pac-12 competitors on the testing restrictions.

Like you saw in the Pac 12 matches this past weekend.

Like you saw in the Pac 12 matches this past weekend. Stanford will for VB but not some other sports like BB. Pretty sure the masks for VB are so that it can test less often bc it makes VB medium contact under the PAC-12 rules. AFAIK, VB is the only sport that applies to.
SCC doesn't divide the sports that way (but they'll still need to wear masks in VB to comply w the PAC rules). I'm not sure what the VB rules are for Santa Clara University, SJSU, or any other Santa Clara COunty college with a VB team.

If I'm reading correctly, SCC just requires one PCR test for everybody in the away team's travel party. That's very easy. Teams won't have any issue complying with that.

Yes, I was talking more generally about collegiate and professional teams in SCC. I know that some Santa Clara VB fans read the Stanford thread and many of the Stanford VB fans follow other sports like BB, water polo, tennis, baseball, softball, gymnastics, etc. A few of us are even Sharks fans.

Looks like they're returning to indoor practice so that's a positive sign I hope.

I believe all Pac-12 volleyball teams are doing a least 3x week at least testing and 48 hrs before matches, so should be good with visiting teams! Glad to hear they can be back in the gym!
