I only summited a Name that I thought was the best out there for This job and why. I showed his record in a great career compared to Mike ..who we all agree is a great coach. His best year.. Yelins team beat Mikes best team. My daughter never let me forget.. The final 4's give Mike the edge as far as team going further..But Yelin is a worthy contender for this job opening when you compare where he has coached..his results and at every place he went he improved or won. So My question is why all the arguments ? Who have you summited who is better ? If you can pick someone better? Please do.. My choice would win here next year. The only reason I summited the name. My 2nd choice is still Northern Iowa. I hope she isn't retired this week. I'm sorry, this is just me, but I can't take it any more: SUBMITTED. You submitted a name. You did not ascent to the peak of a name. And I think all the arguments come from your assertion that Yelin is by far the best option out there, or that he'd take Minnesota further than Hebert has. People are hesitant to use absolutes.

Because -- and only because -- Bill dragged my name into this for some reason (as an authority?? me??) ...
I did not attend Gopher VB matches prior to Mike becoming coach, except when the Badgers came up and played. I was a Badger fan (being a WI native, and a UW-Madison graduate). The attendance at that time seemed reasonable, though I have no real recollection of how many were there.
I started watching the Gophers with Mike's first match, and I'm 95% sure that I have missed two home matches in the last 15 years. I do not believe any claim of 400 -- even as an average -- in Mike's early years. Again, I didn't count them, and I didn't collect stat sheets, but there were more that 400 people in the Pav. I do remember some friends commenting that prior to Mike's arrival, they would often be picked for the intermission contests, but now with the increased attendance they "never got picked any more."

During the 2003 season, Coach Yelin led his U of L team to a 31-3 record and upset with a four-game sweep over then-No. 6 ranked Minnesota who ended up making a Final Four appearance. Ah yes... 2003. When the team appeared to feel that because we were ranked #6, all opposing teams would roll over and play dead. I made every single match that year (home and away), and I am still really proud of how that team finished, but regardless of how we ended up, or how we were ranked at the start, we were not a #6 team -- nor even a top-25 team -- at the beginning of the season.

I don't like that this Gopher person is now participating on the Women's forum.
His posts are organized really weird. He starts new lines for each sentence.
And he CAPITALIZES random words.
And the posts are really long.
I just don't like it.

pretty sure a couple years that maturi put a ban on recruiting trips overseas for all Minnesota programs and that was the leading factor in brad james leaving the golf team since most of his kids were from New Zealand/Australia/England.
With the economy still down and plenty of budget concerns remaining, I would doubt this policy has been lifted so it would seem really odd to hire a coach who specializes in something you won't allow him to do.

Bill keeps asking for better available coach so I'll give him one. He won TWO NC's. Took the absolute worst team in the B10 to a top 5 nationally. Won BIG at Big schools. Won 554 matches. Was AC to Mike. Laura was AC to him. Connections to Sports Performance. www.msuspartans.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/120204aaa.html

Ah mi amigo jt.( and the main stat guy)My wife who was also my setter differs with you.K says the PAID attendance ( )was less than 400 in several games..we could count fans and hear a pin drop during the early days.If not for parents and us faithful there would have been nada. I was hoping your stat sheet maybe would reveal that to be correct.I am only quoting a source when I typed that link..its their 4 game sweep not mine. smily still hasn't given us a name or resume.I have done so..and answered why he is the best for this job out there.IMO..but of course. You could start with how many championships they won? Now about rankings and records..You dont get to cherrypick. Yelin was the coach that beat Mike. Head to head. Does that make him a better coach..no..it does show his team beat a big 10 team that year. The whole attendance deal is a big deal. That and going farther than winning 2 matches in the tourny That was the reason Chris fired the previous coach.Despite her 20-10 record.( that meant absolutely nothing) There was no spark.. No media coverage...until Mike arrived. If you took the time to read the job application that was posted #6 is on the list of qualifications. Also being in charge of a winning , successful program was #1 and #2 was Financial. How can an assistant be qualified if they haven't done so before? ? I believe Mr. M would wave the rule for the right person..rules are only a guideline.Maybe Jt or R can talk to him about that..I haven't seen or spoken to him for several years since I moved up north. He seemed to be Ok dude when I spoke to him..of course I talked to everybody,GO FIGURE.

Chuck?
Nc at USC dont count. That is like Woodens record at UCLA when they had all the best talent every year. Besides.he was born in 44 and is too old.
See how crappy that can be?
He is a great coach.Shook his hand at his place once.

First despite a number of posters who said they attended MN games back in those days saying otherwise let's say your attendance figures are right what were Ul's figures or 90% of other schools those days. And you're going back and forth paid or unpaid to suit your argument. To a non revenue sport attendance of any sort is what's most important. And just because somethings free doesn't mean people will go to it.
Quite a number of coaches have beaten Mike HTH. So they're All qualified to take over for Mike? How about the coaches that beat Yelin HTH. A lot of teams have beaten B10 teams over the years. UL never lose to a B10 team? I know they have since I've been to a number of them most at UL.
Your so called facts are all over the place and all to many are single/few events that you act like they're the standard.
WTF!!! Records don't count when a team has the best team every year? I think there some PSU people who would disagree with that. Chuck's NCs don't count because he had too much talent? How about what he did at MSU? They were BAD when he got there.

Bill continues to state incorrect information. This is his pattern wherever he posts.
Apparently there is nothing you can do about it.
His attendance figures are wrong. His comparison is incorrect (how about 5 teams to the FF versus ZERO?). His evaluation of the program pre-Mike is totally incorrect. Does he even know the number of teams which were invited in those days?
Bottomline, however, is that Yelin is not and never will be a candidate for this position. Why are we wasting so much space with this?

Now just to piss you off.
I was there and you know it. My opinion is based upon observations..conversations and meetings with who knew about all this stuff and why.
What I cannot understand is why you continue to disallow any OTHER OPINION other than what yours is as baseless and less factual.
It is like 2 people observing the weather during the same day.
I claim it was mostly sunny ..while you say it was partly cloudy.
Why would you continue to bash my observations while I never attack yours.
RE READ this entire thread.and the original post topic and 1st comment.
It was about the NEXT coach and the concerns over RECRUITMENT. I posted an HONEST opinion and why.My concerns over the the next coach are and still remain appropriate. My solution was viable while yours was what??
Force my opinion to go away.??
OK I will ..
Once again someone is forced to leave because of what They personally observed and commented upon and someone else disagreed.
I'll stick to the political side.. Sorry to waste your precious time and space

It's not an OPINION when you make claims about attendance figures and statistical facts about the program prior to Mike. Do you not understand that we can CHECK what you say? Or that some of us were actually THERE??
No one is forcing you to go away. Your opinion about Yelin is misguided (imo), but not once have I told you not to express it. It's the other stuff that you post that is just flat out not true.

Bill, if you refuse to read other posts and understand you are comparing apples and oranges at times, and refuse to give others the respect you so demand, then I bid you adieu.
I hate to see anyone leave VT, but I fear you will have dain bramage from beating your head against the wall if you continue this obsession with Yelin.
As his agent, maybe you try to book him in some golf matches when he gets to South Florida.

I agree with ruffda its silly as they wouldnt hire him. Having said that, if they did, he would be very succesful, lost in all the foreign recruiting etc..... is the fact he is a fantastic volleyball coach. Better than Mike? who knows, probably better in some areas, and weaker in some. His career however hasnt been as strong as Mike's.
