Some observations from the PSU match:
IPFW will be as strong as they were last year if not a bit better. I think they lost a touch of blocking with the loss of Sedar but Oliveira will be more than an adequate replacement. Josh Stewart has improved a bit. He's getting a little stronger and that coupled with his size will make him a bigger threat than when he first got here. One change from last year, Morici is injured (apparently) and Matt Pliske took his spot. Pliske passed fairly well. He didn't do much defensively but it was one match... maybe he'll get better. I wouldn't classify IPFW as ever being a good defensive team.
Macias is still good as ever. I would worry about burning him out before the season is over but that wasn't a problem last year. Josh Collins and Brock Ullirich on the outside were mediorce but consistent. Both of them have cranked up their serves a bit from last year which will help IPFW's blocking a lot this year.
Overall, I think this team probably will be better than last year. Not because of more talent but more polish and more contributions from more people other than Macias. I haven't seen anyone in the MIVA yet but have a hard time believing there is a better team out there. (in the MIVA that is) Would have been nice if IPFW got invited to the Outrigger to really see where they were at but apparently Loyola is going? Anyone know why IPFW wasn't invited?

They were invited. Hawaii always invites the NCAA Championship participants from the previous year.

Why would IPFW turn that down? Doesn't make sense.

IPFW didn't turn the invitation down because of money, Coach Ball said right after the MIVA championship game with Loyola last year, that he was going to turn the invitation down. He already had trips planned to California and Puerto Rico, and the Hawaii trip would be extra traveling with no benefits. IPFW already plays quality west coast teams like Long Beach, Northridge, Santa Barbara every year.
oh and about the money, IPFW MVB team is about to become the ONLY completely endowed program in the country, thanks to Arnie's fundraising efforts. (and for those who don't know what that means, it means that the program will not be getting any monetary contributions from the university and the athletics department)

Can't say there is no benefits.... playing in Hawaii would help recruiting and playing in front of crowds that size would be good for them. Granted, IPFW's crowds have been great loud and fun, doesn't compare playing in Hawaii.

of course this is good...
Arnie Ball secured a committment from a local billionaire businessman to match every dollar raised for the program up to $1 million. so if Arnie raises $500K, he will get another $500K from this businessman. considering Arnie is an expert at fundraising, sort of like Bob Knight, he will have lots and lots of money for his program, that can be used for scholarships (instead of getting money from the university), travel, equipment, etc.

"I haven't seen anyone in the MIVA yet but have a hard time believing there is a better team out there. (in the MIVA that is)" I went to the season opener for Loyola and they are pretty good. Their primary OH was out with a bad ankle. The OPP that has taken Kozlarek's place is fierce (Ian Anderson ?). He has a huge jump and could be a big asset for Loyola this year. The match Friday with IPFW should be great.

Outrigger will be Hawaii, PSU, BYU, and Loyola. Not sure who got the original invites. I know some of the MPSF teams don't want to make multiple trips to the islands in one year. As far as money I believe Hawaii helps out with alot of the visiting teams expenses. And yes I have heard that Hawaii doesn't like inviting UCLA because they always beat them.
Another thought is that coach Ball doesn't want to have his team get abused by BYU so early in the season. Sometimes big losses early on can effect a team for a while. Will see what happens to PSU and Loyola after they get spanked out there.

And it doesnt matter if ipfw is the best team in the MIVA cause when they get to ohio st in may they are still going to get crushed, just like last year
