There seems to be a lot of transfers between the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Was last year like this too? I think its better documented this year than last....its really not that many players, all things considered...

I think its better documented this year than last....its really not that many players, all things considered... I don't necessarily agree. There are 327 D1 schools. Assume 2 setters per team give you 654 setter. (Rough I know - some schools more than 2 setter, but then again Seniors graduate high schoolers just join and would not be counted as a transfer.) OP now has 21 setters transfers and I am sure there are some that are undocumented. 21/654 = 3.2%. 3.2% transfers sounds like a lot to me. Some more aggressive assumptions and you can easily get to 5% of setters are transfers - 1 in 20. Sounds like a lot. Maybe setters are a sprecial case? But like was said, maybe just better documented.

Some are transferring to better programs and some are returning home or moving closer to home... I'd say this year's setter transfers are partially due to a great crop of 2010s and a little out of the ordinary...

Setters are like QB's, hard to have controversy and once the coach has chosen their starter, they don't usually change them. Also think that verbal commitment is the cause of so many transfers. NCAA needs to take a hard look at that- it's ruining the sport. Kids too young to make that decision as Sophs, and so many things change. Get rid of it!!

I agree!!Most Sophs in HS don't know what they want to wear to practice let alone where they want to go to college!! The trouble with the verbal commitment is that its not legislated by the NCAA... and with as much as they are cutting back rules - I don't see them waging that battle!

And how in the world do you legislate that a high school student can't say something? Not possible.

They can legislate what College Coaches can do. For example, no verbal or written offers until the players are seniors in high school.

They can legislate what College Coaches can do. For example, no verbal or written offers until the players are seniors in high school. Written offers are already illegal, but how can you legislate effectively against a verbal agreement if both parties are willing to keep it quiet? There is nothing the NCAA can do about that. IMO nothing will change until PSA's start backing out of commitments right before signing dates like FB and MBB. Programs will wait to offer so they have a better idea that they won't get stuck flapping in the wind on signing day.

Cash under the table works if both parties keep quiet.
