A lot of things can drive you crazy during doubles play, but one that cracks me up is often the "urgency of play (Hey, I have to leave after this game) while the handling of the ball for the next play is about the slowest, most inefficient thing done:
#100 - Get a ball to a server as fast as possible! I see groups playing with 3-7 balls available and what happens after a play: 1) Ball in play is retrieved (even though another ball is RIGHT NEXT to the server or close to another player who could send it to the server). 2) Ball, after being retrieved is TOSSED to the server, often hitting a divot and careening off court, or thrown past him/her only to be re-retrieved by the Server 3) Server, after getting ball, walks back to the service line and serves COME ON! Servers, grab a ball, any ball, and get the game going.

I understand your frustrations for sure. Just grab one of the other 7 balls and toss it to the server. It can't be that hard.

mavericks: I hear ya...truth is, they DON'T....I have to "direct traffic". WORSE is throwing the ball to the server from the other side where they are left with no volleyballs and the server now has the other 3 or 4 and NOW yours: You side out and hit the ball in the corner and are ready to serve and viola, no ball to serve: "can we have one of your FIVE BALLS"..... I know, its winter, and not many stories, but lets speed PLAY up .....

I agree with everything you said in principle. However, here in Arizona balls wear out quickly (since we're lucky enough to play on desert sand (dirt) in most places) so I hate when mid-game someone switches from a nice ball to an old dirty worn out ball. Or a ball that is over/under inflated. Best case scenario is have 4-5 good balls to choose from - it just doesn't always happen that way.

stevek: Great point, but that leads to #99: Bring a ball, a good one......I mean, a average round of golf is about $60 up here in Northern California and we can't pry $40-50 from each player every 3-6 months for a new ball? Come on you "I don't bring a ball to play" ers.....I actually think the act of bringing a playable (meaning "reasonably new") ball to play is INVERSELY related to your skill level (Lower level players are more apt to bring them than their higher player counterparts), UP TO a certain level where you bring a bag of 12 and you're in a new "atmosphere"....

#98 - Learn the rules, don't "invent" them.....
Its amazing, with game with so few real rules regarding "playing the ball" how we come up with:
1-If you are making a hitting motion, the play is legal
2-If the ball spins over 1 1/2 times on an open hand set, it is a fault ...etc......
I mean, it is AMAZING that so few people have read the few CBVA rules (here in Cali), AND understand them....."Oh my shot was legal".....REALLY, well it wasn't and you've only played 6 months and my partner was a AA in his early days and YOU WANT TO ARGUE WITH HIM and you've NEVER read the rule book...? Oh what is this world coming to....

Jim: I often get lost in the context of some of your conversations. What are you talking about per #1 #2 No it is just plain ugly but it is supposed to be a fun game. Low sets at 1.5 would look worse than a high set due to the distance. Is that clock wise or counter clockwise it never stops being debated. You must spend hours driving over the hill thinking of this stuff. You are still playing with guys who have just started playing (6 months ago ) when you partner is an X-AA. Let all of us know when you and your AA play against Kitchell or Gysinsr start with Cornick. I think all of those guys were X-AA or AAA from Santa Cruz. Should be interesting I am not picking on your just interested in putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together. Surfs 4 foot in SOCAL and in the 70's. LIfe's a beach- get there somehow. DIGIT

digit: 9 feet at Steamers today! Rantings are just winter deliberations until something in beach starts up and with no AVP, limited "other schedules", these posts may persist...Hacks UNITE! or is that UNTIE?......Side-out....

Legit Peeve..
Playing with 5 or 6 balls, all of them have been hit away from the court.. You go to retrieve the ones on your side. Your opponent shags none, or maybe just the close one so they can serve..

Jim - Your right Steamer’s is crankin. Viewed steamers cameras with friend who moved to Fiji – he pulls out pictures of tube ride with his pet monkey on his shoulder tough act to follow. I think next review should be on moral code of playing with X AA against two guys with 6 months experience. Just heard that Jack Butefish who really put Beach V-ball on the map died. Great loss I was hopeful he would a give it a try again. Balls on the court: I have always been amazed that in SOCAL the number of balls on the court is supposed to signify to others " AVP PRO at work - no challenges" Another good thing that the AVP is dead. Added to that is placement of a digital camera on a court - Saturday or Sunday as another means of keeping control of the court. Especially amongst the girls or some wanna-be coach. Never could figure out that a bag full of volleyballs, having lines, etc was a status symbol and made you a better player. No wonder it is tough to expand the sport – not overly friendly sometimes. digit....You can watch similar "Steamers" on the AT&T with Tiger & Co....pretty massive.....watched them from the wharf and boats were out there viewing the surfers....
Yeah, our sport is a mess...So here we are at #97 - If you play, you either have too many players, or not enough players and your response is relative to the situation. You're "nice" if you need a 4th, but a "5th", well, let us play 2 more and if we stay, you can play the final game.......As much as I hate that, there is a reason "...you're the FIFTH"....(that's usually me).
Feast of famine....I've seen Main Beach filled with players and you can't get a game and then when there are 2 or 3 trying to get a game and they'll play with ANYONE.....
So, the moral is, just because you're "comfortable" with your group and things are going well, its just a matter of time when someone moves, has a baby, gets a new job, or gets a LOT BETTER etc. and its all down the drain......Be lucky you got some games in......

#96 - If someone is waiting to challenge and 2 or more won't be playing the next game, LET that player know there won't be a subsequent game.
I remember sitting on a court waiting to play (OK, I agree, they were probably out of my skill level a bit; my earlier days and naive ones) and I waited for a game to 28 and the guys left. No big deal, but whisper to the guy waiting that "I think this is our last game" (Hey, even if he leaves you can play another one and he'll "catch-on" ;-} ..... BUT, don't just play it out & leave someone stranded with a lame duck game....
Its "what you do"....

OK, long enough: #95 - Everybody's got a BIG MOUTH, until its time to call "OUT"....
Whats up with THAT? I play regularly with MANY different players in a week (probably at low A/B level AND below) and I can count on my hands how many have a reliable and consistent call of "OUT". When its over 2' out, it doesn't count. I know 1/2 the population are shy but REALLY, the ball is out by 6" and I'm waiting for the "call".....NOT THERE. You want to argue for a 1/2 hour about a situation that's not going to go your way and yet you have an opportunity for practically a 2 point swing on a line-out call and you DON'T TAKE IT? WTx.....SPEAK UP Man, I can't HEAR you.....LOL

#94 - If you don’t know the service order, you’re not very creative...
"I just served", "I haven't served yet", "you've been serving after me".....yada, yada, thud..... Use a ring, rock in pocket or other "identifier" to let you know if you are "line or angle" in sequence to serve. I made a little bead ring that goes on my left hand if I serve after the right side server and the right if I follow the left server....regardless, come up with SOMETHING....
The next time you lose the service order, you can review your “critique” of this idea and say "...maybe he has something here"…and it will be TOMORROW….LOL

OK, Life on Volleytalk is very pre-season ( no mucho informacion), so I offer up #93: If you're playing in the RAIN (Like we did today at Main Beach Santa Cruz), DON'T ROLL THE BALL TO THE SERVER when its wet everywhere!!!! K?
Toss the ball to the server and save the 3 oz of sand that will accumulate on the ball during that "roll"..... Keep it clean, guys!!!
