ironic that you’re coming off as so abrasive in your replies

Plenty of professional players make obvious, repeated mistakes. Troy Field for example makes many, Tim Bomgren's crummy serve, Ricardo's often lazy play. Also if you don't like the thread don't read it, but many of us enjoy it. Yes, that’s quite true. Watch any NFL team with a losing record and you will see lots of flaws. But to call such things “SO obvious” seems overly demeaning to me. It sounds like the epitome of a Monday Morning Quarterback, which no one likes. I don’t like the thread at all, and I won’t be reading it anymore. However, I do think it’s at least worth noting that this thread comes off as incredibly abrasive. I’ve always found the volleyball (and beach volleyball) community to be open and inviting. However, I worry that if a new player stumbled upon this thread it would discourage them from participating because it seems, at face value, quite critical of anyone that is not good enough to live up to standards that even professional players do not meet. If this thread was filled with useful etiquette such as Bucky presented with being ready to play immediately after the previous match it could be really useful. But telling players not to hit the wrong shot doesn’t help anyone. I do hope you continue to enjoy the conversation and it doesn’t discourage anyone from participating. I apologize for any negative bent to any players, new or otherwise. I DO play with an "eclectic" group who do some rather odd on-court behaviors which I document in this post. We are lucky to play the great game on the sand, but MANY people take it more seriously than is necessary and thus the post. People CHANGE when they cross the lines into the beach game and that is what I was trying to frame some of that as problematic at times. I'm NOT soliciting the world to enter the courts, but rather trying to show some humor on some crazy things that happen at the beach . . . Hope none of this came off other than what was intended, some truth, some joking, some for introspection on the part "of a few" . . . It's a charged game, and I've tried to document some . . .

#2 – We give thanks . . .
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we ALL know how lucky we are to be associated with a game “beyond games” that really is incomparable to others in all measurements. Beach Volleyball IS the BEST sport you can be associated with and/or PLAY!
Let’s examine this objectively:
1 – COST – Next question? Actually, my grandson has taken up the sport and quickly become a low B player at the beach. Total costs so far for the year: A $50 less on and a $40 ball. He is playing regularly with NO COSTS as we play at Main Beach Santa Cruz. Yes, as I will invest in him to be more competitive soon, right now ZERO cost. Go BIG? $400 portable court, otherwise, $40 ball and “pool attire”!
2 – SKILL – Is there a sport that requires more varied skills? PLUS, you might often have to “play all day” as opposed to many 2+ hour sports. The issue here is that in volleyball, unlike most other sports, requires that the ball must be “kept afloat”. That bring in a whole plethora of skills that other sports do not require. In addition, there are plenty of opportunities, as opposed to other sports, with 40 or so point’s scored IN A SINGLE GAME, with an associated number of 200-300 CONTACTS . . .
3 – AESTHETICS – Gym rat building or beach setting? Here in Santa Cruz, there is only one place more beautifully set than Santa Cruz for sporting events and that would be Pebble Beach Golf Course, right down the road. But the $575 (Plus cart) green fee has to be considered a constraint.
4– FLEXIBILITY – Beach doubles is one of the few sports you can “relatively mix and match” and still have a competitive game with “plenty of work for everyone”. Old and young, coed, fours, etc. The fun never ends, but you would be hard pressed to pull off this variety and sustain competiveness in any other sport.
5 – INJURY – Show me a sport that produces fewer injuries than beach volleyball. I’m waiting. That’s what I thought . . . NONE. Other than the “overused arm” and a few contacts at the net, after a full day of beach volleyball, next day, you’re VERY likely “good to go”.
6 – INCLEMENT WEATHER – We play in rain, wind and (actually) snow. The surface drains so no reason to EVER call a game. Lightening? OK, I’ll give you that.
7 - CAMARADERIE – Beach seems to attract a very select group of people. I don’t know if it’s’ the nature of the sport, it being a “Smart sport”, as there are so many resources & skills you have to manage, but the people I have come in contact with are a special type. MOST of my friends play the game and it connects everyone. It is almost a language to itself, understood by few. Because of the closeness of partner, players and groups, the friendships are lifetime.
8 – ACCESS - The greater community of skilled players aka the CBVA, AVP, FIVB allow you as a fan to enjoy the greatest sport with the most access to celebrities of any sport. Not even a close call elsewhere. Where can you watch a match, as I did once, in the grandstands of the FIVB Long Beach chatting with my friend and asking “Who’s playing in the finals”? Whereupon the voice from the bench seat behind me says “I am” (Pedro Salgado). Spectacular!
Kudos to guest2 who has been very kind during all these “aberrant, 3 dot journalistic rants” throughout these last few years counting down”, an example of our fantastic beach volleyball community and spirit. . . ;-)

Where are you getting $40 balls from and can I get a hook up The wear and tear is 100% spot on. I played 4-5 days a week from April to late October this year and missed only 2 games with ankle issues. Played indoor one day a week these last few weeks and my sciatica flared up right away. If the only options for indoor sand were closer than a 45 minute drive I'd stick with it this winter.

February 5, 2022 would work too--10th anniversary! LOL . . Yeah, I remember thinking "I've been doing this for a few years" and then looked at the start date! Like when I tell stories of the "good old days" and I say "Yeah, that was TWENTY years ago" . . . and add, "Well, actually it was FORTY, but twenty sounds better" . . . hahahaha

#1 - The END:
This “officially” ends this nine-plus-year thread. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. We have an eclectic group in Santa Cruz so I was able to extract some “questionable activities” from their on-court behaviors and expound on them. But as we go down in skill while up in age, I offer George Washington Carver’s great quote that applies to playing beach volleyball as well as life itself:
How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the strong-because someday you will have been all of these
Side . . . . OUT Jim “The Commish” McNamee San Jose, California Saturday, December 25, 2021 . . . and THAT’S the way it is!
